I think I need a sand thats about 500-1000 microns, most of the unipac sands are more widely sized and the jbl sansibar river looks quite big in some pics, almost like fine gravel.

Unipac selection - http://www.unipacpet.co.uk/aquatic/aquarium-sand/

JBL sansibar river (more expensive, looks nice but maybe a bit on the big side, website says "Granulation: 0.4 – 1.4 mm. Very well suited e.g. for cory catfish." Im not sure might be a bit on the big side looking at the close up

I want something nice looking thats not play sand fine or a sand that is bordering being gravel.

If you don't want play sand, then pool filter sand is probably the next most economnical option. Makes a great substrate IMO

With pool filter sand Im worried that it will vary on colours depending where you buy it from, maybe someone can share a pic and recommend a place to get it?

I only use and recommend Estes marine sand. It is very uniform, the perfect size, has color options, requires no cleaning, and requires no maintenance, ever.
