Well, basically last night I look over and one of my bettas his missing a huge chunk of his bottom fin. My first reaction was to quarantine him, and today I picked up meds. But this huge chunk gone missing, it had to happen over the period of maybe 12 hrs before I noticed it. Now, 12 hours later, he's sitting in the salted quarantine tank, and the missing chunk hasn't gotten any bigger at all....

Is this:

A. Fin rot, and he's just already healing

B. He managed to tear his fin wicked badly on a rock or plastic plant

I'm just not sure if I want to add these green meds or not... I'd appreciate your opinions. Thanks.

From what I understand, bettas like a bit of salt in their water, generally speaking. Anyone know for sure on this? Also, the chunk missing from his fin still seems to not be progressing. Starting to think he just ripped it really bad. I'll be watching it closely, if it progresses at all, I'll use metaflex for sure.

I use 1/4tsp per gallon with all fish. Forget the salt taboo. My corries are the happiest in the world!!!A little is ok, infact, great. The salt container says to use 2 tblsp per 10 gal, but I think 1 is more like it and it won't hurt anyone. I use at same time as medication. I use melafix. Is that what you mean or is that a different product?

I think melafix is the proper word. I've never used it, was just copying what tropjunky said! hehe. I deifnitely think Zeus the betta seems happier in the salt, and I can't see any worsening of the wound on his fin. But my GOODNESS did he tear a fat chunk out of it. Not sure how he managed that.
