i have a prob and i don't know what to do :

i've got all this white stuff floating on the water i don't know
how it got there or what it is but i can get rid of it it like petrol
on water if that helps thanx

the film on the top of the water is usually caused by not having enough aeration or water disturbance at the top.

oh right well i have air stones and filter with carbon in it to help water
so i would of though that would be enuff but i guess not so how do i get
rid of it ?

i would try to lower the water a level a bit to increase surface agitation from the filter.

Sometimes, but it can also be down to the type of food being given. Some flake foods have this effect.

well ive taken some water out and left the light out all day just gone to turn it
back on and its still laying on water

skim it off the top of the water using a plastic cup. just dip the edge of the cup under the water's surface and allow the cup to slowly fill. you should be able to see the surface scum flowing into the cup. once you stop seeing the scum flow, empty the cup and start over in an area with more surface scum.

that will get rid of the problem temporarily, but it will probably come back unless changes are made to your setup. can you tell us:

--what size tank?
--what type of filter and gph rating?
--fish and other livestock
--what brands of fish food do you feed?
--how often and roughly how much do you feed?

so i went on ebay and had a look at skimmers do u think thay would help the prob
or would i be wasteing my money allso anyone got any idears as to what to do with
this crap on my water menny thanx

I don't think skimmers work well in FW (they need a higher specific gravity to work efficiently). What fish foods do you use??

Here is a thread on using a skimmer in FW...
