Hi i got a pair of blue rams last week and 1 of them swims about with other community fish and his colours are very light, the other one hangs out in the corner of the tank and comes out rarely, but does come out at feeding time every time.
His colours are very bright and its lik he is flared up all the time.

the problem is that the bright ram attacks the side of the other ram when near each other and so the other one will then flare up as well. the bright chases him and kind of attacks the side of the body , there is no damage though.

can anyone help me on what to do about it and how to sex these rams thanks!

Got any photos? These will be key to sexing them as colouration is usually the primary give away :)

Sounds to me like you've got yourself 2 males though, as one seems to be the dominant causes the other the cower away.

A dead give away is the big black spot on there sides, if both are clear from blue specs then you've likely got 2 males. If either has a pink(ish) belly then thats a female :)

they both have blue speckles round the black spot, so would this mean they are female and is this normal behaviour of two females??

If there only around the black and not on it then there males :)

Take one back and keep an eye open for a female ;) remember the tell tale signs!

they have blue dots all over body i have picture to upload but dont know how to as it doesnt give me an option to upload a picture when replying, what do i do to upload pictures onto this??

Both males and females will have blue dots all over, what matters is the black dot. If the blue specs ALSO cover the black spot its a female, if they are around but not on the spot then there males :)

This is a general rule but for now its as good as it gets ;)

First upload it to a hosting site (eg photobucket)...Once this is done, get the direct address of the image (right click it, properties then copy the URL)...When posting it here just click the "insert image" button and paist that URL in the pop-up box.

If you don't get your own photo up this might help: you can see the Ram on the right has a red belly and no black dot on the side so is female. The one on the left is male: no red belly but distinct back dot on the side.

Guy at my LFS said he's heard of a Ram that was a bit psycho... went around pecking the eyes out of neons, nasty! My are pretty placid though.

ok looking at both of mine now compared to this picture one is definately male it looks like the one on the left identical

the other has the blue speckles over black dot, doesn't have pink belly but could be due to still being young and she is alot paler than the male.

so from this can you tell me if this is normal behaviour i discused in the first post of this topic
thanks

My female Ram does not always display a red belly. My Rams are very changable in colour.

Females are more oval shaped than males, who have longer bodies. Females also have smaller and more founded pelvic fins.

Hope this helps.

Andy :)

Sorry, I can't really help you there, I've only had my Rams a week and they're pretty placid. Maybe you do just have 2 males but they're coloured differently....? If it's still going on i'd take them back to the LFS and ask the guy for a definite male/female pair.
