Wahoo! I am meeting with my manager on monday :)

Waterchanges.. i am currently doing waterchanges each week. I have the skimmer sat in a bucket in my livingroom so hopefully it will be fixed soon and skimming effectively.

I didnt even know what a refugium was until this week when i have been researching it all. I stil do not understand it completely. What would determine whether you need one or not? Or do all tanks require one?

I am going to see if i can pick up some cheap lights tomorrow along with some other stuff (my own spare heater went to the mudskipper today). My manager said to me if i feel i can accomplish this all then i can go ahead. I will be looking to see if i can get a hood for this tank tomorrow and if not, will start measuring up our spare tanks on Monday and plan the move. The students are on christmas hols now so i can put time in to this :)

I really hope things work out for you. You are doing a lot with very little and I applaud this. :D

I am back from my visit to see my friends at the aquatic shop. I have a fixed skimmer, a marine white bulb and the knowledge of making a hood for this tank.

The skimmer... The impellor in the pump was broke and looked like it had been broke for a long time. It was completely clean as were the sponges in the bubble stopper thing. The leak has been fixed. The pipe was cleaned then glued back on.. it actually went on further than it had before with the lubrication from the glue so it should be fixed now. Also, the silencer had been placed on the overflow pipe that had been hanging out the tank for months LOL! So thats why we think it was so noisy. Ive been advised to remove the sponges from the "bubble box" as i like to call it or just get rid of the bubble box.

I wasnt told any numbers for anything but i was told the water was fine and their PH test didnt read as high as the 8.8 i was getting at work.

I have prices for some new circulator powerheads, a refractometer, and a new complete test kit :)

This is good news. Glad the pH isn't testing as high. I knew your test kit was perhaps dodgy.

The clown hasn't even got a mark on him today.

I was talking with my co-worker and she really thinks that I will not be allowed to buy R.O water and there is nowhere to plumb a unit in. I explained how there should be a significant difference in water evaporation if we get a hood on this tank. We shall see, but i am starting to doubt it all :(

I carried out a water change today. Figured i may aswell since i had to top up 2" of the tank anyway through evaporation. Haven't done any tests on it though.

How often should you carry out a waterchange on a marine tank?

I try and do weekly changes on my freshwater tank at home but have no idea about marine tank w/c's

Info i found out today:
Apparently the internal filter i removed had a cannister filled with a phosphate remover (if i remember correctly) but was more than likely inactive by now.

And.. the last time there was a nitrate problem more live rock was added to sort it out. Are there not easier and cheaper methods than this?

The PH apparently normally reads 8.8 but i believe it is higher because thats as far as the PH test goes so we can't say for sure it is 8.8

I am confused as to why you would not be able to BUY R.O. water? Its fairly cheap here and easily accessible. Amazing work here, being thrown into this so head on. I do applaud you!

I don't think it's a matter of it being unavailable, but rather a matter of her employers not allowing her to make that investment in the tank.

Yes ,it is all a matter of money, not availability.

I put the skimmer back on the tank on Monday, it was collecting loads of waste in the cup... Then yesterday afternoon it wasn't working properly again :( the water level/flow in it has dropped again and it wont go back up. Took the impellor out and it looked fine. Think its knackered :(

Sometimes skimmers are just really tricky and weird. So glad I don't use them.

It's a shame that they are not more willing to invest in this tank.

This tank is unfortunately nothing compared to more important matters :/ i cant really go in to it though on here.

Whilst the pump isnt getting the water level high enough in the skimmer to get the bubbles in the cup, it is disgusting in the top of the centre cannister bit below the cup. No idea if i can clean that lol.

I normally flick past the marine section in PFK but recently found myself reading it in great detail. I have itchy fingers... My boyfriend says no though LOL!

I actually haven't started reading the magazines yet. Was never a big magazine fan.

Ive never bought a magazine in my life but we now occasionally get PFK and BBC Wildlife magazine if it has some articles that take my fancy. I got this one because it has a little guide to setting up marine tanks lol.. also has some good plant stuff in hehe

Bought a brand new Refractometer for £15 online so i have been having fun with that this morning. Made a DIY hood for the tank out of condensation trays and a light unit haha :) looks rubbish but itll do for now until i can make one. Got a potential massive project about to happen involving a discus tank so i might have to start a journal elsewhere
