Need Help, Confused.

basically, i have a 4 ft fish tank, been going for over 6 months. it is 165 litres. my current stock is

2 keyhole cichlids
4 guppies
6 platy
3 mollies

basically my cichlid have been eating my guppies tails, and kill a platy yesterday. my partner brought them being told they are very calm fish and would be fine with everyone else in the tank. have done some research, not a good mix.

so i am now stuck with the chose of re homing them or splitting my tank. which i am quite tempted to do, but not sure of the implications.

i have got some acrylic, with can be cut to fit the tank to act as a divider. and lots and lots of little ting holes to drilled into it. to allow water to move all round tank but not the fish. will my one filter and heater be OK or do i need to get one for each side.

then stocking, do i work the stocking out as a whole or do each side individual, like it was two tanks.

Unfortunately you have learnt a simple lesson the hard way and that is never take what a LFS (local fish shop) owner says for granted. There are some that will give you genuinely good advise but they are as rare as honest politicians.

Do not feel bad as many have fell for this maybe more have than have not.

I am afraid I cannot help you on splitting the tank as I have never done it myself. The people that usually split there tanks are the Betta brigade hopefully they will come along and advise you.

I don't actually know but I would think that as long as the water was able to flow through the divider that your current heater and filter would be just fine. That is my thought as they work fine now and as long as the water can still move all around the tank it should stay the same. As for it being divided I would also think that you would have to think of it as two separate tanks. This thought is because it is divided thus giving you less space on each side. You can put 5lbs of dirt in a 1lbs bag.
