I need help choosing a cory cat for when my 55g tank finishing cycling. Right now I have 10 Platy, 3 Otos, around 8 platy fry.

I want a cory that would be the same size as my platys more to the same scale.
The Panda corys seem to grow to the same size as my platys = 1.5''.

Anyone have any comments?

BTW here is a pic of the tank:

Just to add....cory's like to live in groups of 5 or 6..just it sounded with your post you were only wanting one?

I have 6 panda's in a tank I have, along with platy's and a few other fish, and they are nice looking cory's, and do seem smaller than the other cory's I have, how about sterbai? Most cory's don't grow overly big anyway, so I reckon you could go with a number of species, I have bronze, albino, peppered, panda, sterbai and trilineatus...I have not got a favourite I just love them all, infact they are my favourite fish, well that I own anyway :)

(cory's appreciation society)

P.S Nice looking tank by the way!

with my current stock i was only looking for 1 species min of six for a decent schoal.

I checked out the Sterbia.......very nice looking fish. but it looks like it can grow up to 2.5'' a little bigger than what i was looking for. I would rather get more small fish than less big ones.
And I would like ones close to the same size as platys.

So is it confirmed that Pandas are smaller than other common corys.

Debbie do you have a pic of your fish.......I would like to see your setup.

I do have a pic of the set up....here is a pic of my two tanks which contain most of my cory's

Both tanks now have a sand substrate...much better for my cory fish, and the others seem to like it too. I also have 3 more tanks, smaller than those two, but unfortunately no pics....and if my thoughts are right about tonight, one of my cory's have spawned another huge amount of eggs, and if they hatch, I am going to get a grow out tank for them, cannot afford to do much with it, will be a bare bottomed tank plain and simple, but I am hoping they are peppered eggs, rather than bronze which I have reared successfully, but either way...I will raise them.

The sterbai do grow to that size eventually, mine are still fairly small...maybe you might be better going for the panda's....they are gorgeous little things.

Hope you like the pics!

Debbie

Here is a little pic of a few of my cory's at feeding time!

Me too tango..thats why I am hoping that my eggs that I found tonight are the peppered...! Or as my other half calls them...those marbled ones...

Debbie,

Do you have an issue with Platys eating the cory eggs?
I know my platys will eat anything i put in the tank.

What about pygmy cories? Or is 2.5- 4 cm too small for you? If you like that size you choose from C. habrosus, C. nanus, C. pygmaeus y C. hastatus. But with the tanksize you are having, you can easily take bigger ones. Personally I love trilineatus.

I love Corys and im trying to start breeding them atm. I have Peppered, Panda, Bronze and Sterbai and my fav are definately Sterbai. I take it as your still cycling that the fish you have are still quite young? xx

The platys I have are all different ages. the juvenile to adult are in a 10g with otos. i also have another 10g that houses the platys too little yet. the otos are pretty young too. once the 55g is cycled everyone should be able to go right in.

I was looking at the Corydorus habrosus but i felt they would be too small and I heard that they are not really bottom feeders.
also my tank is fairly deep so not sure how well they would be able to get to the surface.
any comments to this.............

trilineatus although attractive are a little too big 5.5cm for my other fish.
although pandas up to 5cm............

I guess im looking between the Corydorus habrosus and the panda.
I can get the pandas cheaper than the pygmys.

Where i am i have to order my fish online.
i have no lfs only a petsmart (half a hour drive) that has limited stock. I was lucky to get the otos there..........

also my tank is fairly deep 53cm so not sure how well they would be able to get to the surface.

Are the habrosus still bottom dwellers? Do they go to the surface often? Is 53cm too far for them to go?

The pygmys grow to 4cm.....is this correct? If so which variety? I see the habrosus growing to 2.5cm

Anyone have any personal experience with the pygmys?

Cant decide........dont want to get any that wont be happy in their home.

1). I dont have any C. habrosus, but Im pretty sure they will stay on the bottom as well as swim in the mid levels of the tank. I know the C. pygmaeus do both.

2). C. pygmaeus get to around 1.3 to 1.4", at least mine have. The females may get bigger.

3). The C. pygmaeus are great. I have a group that have spawned in a 30 gallon tank with loaches and I didnt even know it. I originally had a group of 15 and I moved them to a 10 gallon the other day and the group was up to 17.

If you are looking for bottom dwelling Corydoras, then you might want to think about the bigger species. There are plenty to choose from that stay at or under 2".
