Hi

Building sump itself is not a major issue here.

I need to find out how to balance gravity forced flow rate with back flow of the sump.

Does anyone have a way to calculate how powerful pump return should I use?

Or is it matter of getting power regulated pump so I can match the flow rates?
Or is it matter of running the system first and checking gravity forced flow and then getting pump?

what is the best way to do?

I`m not going to drill the tank I will do diy overflow box

the tank is 4ft and i`m planning to get fit 2ft sump under

The inlet path is NEVER in free-fall ! It can only ever drain to a certain level, then it stops.... Imagine an overflowing glass in the sink, as long as the tap is adding water it will overflow - once the tap is OFF, the glass remains full, but the flow stops... its the same with an overflow.

The return pump should be selected for flow-rate based on YOUR tanks needs... it can be a torrent or a trickle - either way the inlet will automatically follow suit !

Hi rooster

I understand that water will drain only to the level set by overflow pipe,

But inlet will follow only when you will have "closed" sump or it will do with normal open top one?

this is bit this is bit which I cannot understand

but if sump inlet follows outlet I will use my external filter as a pump then

I was thinking that outlet needs to match to speed of inlet?

Thanks

Its an "overflow" thing.... doesn't matter if you are adding a drop at a time, as the main tank is only allowed to overflow beyond a set level, only a drop will "leave" !
Its a difficult thing to visualise, but once the penny drops you will wonder what all the fuss was about !

Have a read of THIS its described much fuller, and theres a diagram that should reveal the principal !
