i have got a 3 ft tropical tank, and im wanting to change my gravle to sand but my dad that has looked after fish before said that if i put sand in my tropical tank it would kill all my fish.

this is the sand im thinking of getting http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/part...text%3ESAND.htm

will my fish die??
and how much bags whould i need to cover my tank?

i was going to take all the stuff out of my tank and the fish, then take all the gravel out and clean all the fish poop and stuff up.

if i put the sand in after ive cleaned it would i have to leave it cycleing for a while ?

or would it go wrong with sand and go into a big cloud of sand

would my live plants be able to cope in sand ?

thanks :)

Nope Your fish will not die :D Many of us on here have used argos play sand and had no problems what so ever . I use it and i used just under 2 bag's so 30Kg for my 42 Gallon Tank. Plants will be fine in a tank like that .

Easiest way is to lower the water level (Remember and turn filter etc off) catch all the fish remove decor Remove the rest of the water . Remove gravel . You're now ready to add your sand get a big bucket put some sand in and rinse it VERY well. Rinse until the water becomes clear and put it in the tank Keep doing it until you have enough sand say about 1 -2 Inches. You can re add your decor and plants now or do it once you've put the water in . If you don't want all the sand kicking up then place a dinner plate upside down on the sand and pour the water in so it hit's the plate .This stops it kicking the sand everywhere. Once tank is filled turn heater back on to get water up to right temp acclimitise fish . If you have any Filter Floss to hand it would be a good idea to add some that way all the finer particles will get stuck in this rather than your filter wait for it to clear then turn filter back on . Will look so much clearer by the morning

When it comes to cleaning the sand rather than sticking the gravel vac into the sand hover about 1-2cm above the sand it will pick up all the poop, food etc you'll suck some sand up to start with but you'll soon get a nack for it !

Hope That Helps

:D
