Hello,
I was wondering for my guppy tank, is an airstone neccessary? and if it is, can it be turned off at night? Since the airpump that I have is very noisy & I thought that turning it off at night can give the fish some quiet time.
Help appreciated :)

airstone is just about pure decoration so it doesnt need to be there and it could be switched off at night

It's not decoration, it provides aeration to the tank... -_-

If your filter gives you some aeration you'll be OK, otherwise leave it on.

airstone adds very little oxygen to the water

The actual airstone doesn't, no, but the bubbles it makes agitates the surface which in turn adds oxygen. Airstones are good in the summer though, because tank temperatures can rise and then you need more oxygen in the tank. If your filter agitates the water a lot, you could be okay. Personal choice.

Okay thanks for clearing that up. Today I don't know what happened to my airpump but somehow water got into it and now it won't work. Is there a way to DIY air pump o_O".

i dont think there is a DIY airpump although i tried blowing through the air line and airstone myself.. very tiring :p

there is a diy fliter in hear some where. it acts like an airstone.

the bubble really add very little to the water its the surface movement that allows the exchange
