today i came home to find Jerome my 11" mayan cichlid seemed unusualy p****d off, when hes happy hes orangey and bluey green with some red. when hes p****d off his colours wash out and he has bold black stripes, anyway i couldnt work out why he was so pissed off until from the corner of my eye, i saw a broken heater. the whole bottom part was smashed off, some of the springs mangled, and i honestly though it wouldve killed him!
ive heard many instances of a large fish usualy oscars smashing into their heaters electricuting their whole tank and killing themselfes so howcome Jerome lives to tell the tale ?

any of you lost fish to this problem?
and do you know why jerome didnt die?
cause im stumped!
thanks in advance for the answers

have you got a heater protector?if no then get one,
when i first set up my tank the heater which i did not notice was fully broken off, which every time i put my arm in the water i got a mild shock, couldnt find the problem, this went on for a week, thought maybe id had a cut somewhere, then discovered the broke glass, fish however were fine

Poor things.
Have you got all the broken heater parts out of the tank.
Do you have a spare heater.

I'd imagine that as there is no earthing route in the tank having the broken heater in the water isn't a 'deadly' problem to the fish, (unless they cut themselves on the glass, or 'cross' the connections of the heater.
However once you touch the water, YOU will be providing a nice route to ground/earth, hence you get a tingle!
Theoretically your fish could even be perfectly ok UNTIL you touch the water, at which point you complete a circuit to ground and cause the electricity to pass through the water and your body, stunning or killing the fish in the process, (I think that's right).
This is why anything combining water and electricity should be fed via an RCD.

well i had to reach in to get all the glass and heater out so hes fine,
i had an old heater up the garden i put in that works fine. its not as powerful but its heating it just as good.
its made of metal casing so luckily i wont need a guard ;)

well im deffo going to get some heater protectors now!!! lol i wish the fluval external filters just had a heater built into them....it would make sense...

im running an eheim on that tank, i think they should have heaters in them too. so much easier.
has anyone tried this ?

you can get heaters that fit to the inlet/outlet tube of externals

but not the fluval range due to their corrogated tubing
