Been keeping fish since a kid..thinking about a nano shrimp tank.
Questions:
Will a 5 gal 20L tank work?
Can it be filterless with lots of plants?
Which is better water rain water or rock hard govt water?
1 shrimp per gal ok?

A 5-gallon is fine. I've heard you can do 10 Shrimp per Gallon.
You can do filterless. Just make sure you have the tank heavily planted and keep up on water changes.
Freshwater shrimp prefer water that's softer and close to neutral.

Freshwater shrimp do not prefer soft water in general. It varies quite a bit between species, but the most common species in the hobby, red cherry shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) and bee shrimp (Caridina cantonensis), have different water needs. Note, the most common bee shrimp color variety is crystal red shrimp, and these are a different species than red cherry shrimp.
  • Bee shrimp are slightly harder to keep than red cherry shrimp
  • Both shrimp prefer temps in the high 60s to low 70s and they should be kept in an unheated tank.
  • Red cherry shrimp like KH of 3-4 and GH of 7-15.
  • Crystal red shrimp like a KH of 0 and a GH of 5-6.
  • pH is not as important as KH and GH for these shrimp.
Red cherry shrimp can survive OK without ideal parameters. In my experience they're very hardy. I hear the same is not true for bee shrimp. Many bee shrimp keepers use RO water and remineralize with a GH supplement. You could do this with rain water if you wanted.

What is the KH and GH of your tap water?

Tanks guys

Thought I made a post.. for some reason didn't work..

Don't know type shrimp to keep.. in LFS the other day.. had wot called rainbow shrimp.. appeared clear.. suspect juveniles.
The kid said other branch wud have others.. maybe..

Can not give u KH no test kit..

From what I remember the GH was really high.
