Time to fluff up a controversial topic. Here is your chance to weigh in for our other members. Do you use a protein skimmer on your nano tank/reef?

Well I have only recently started using a Deltec MCE300 skimmer on my tank to work alongside my HOB refugium and I am quite pleased with doing so, as within the first day or 2 I noticed the skimmer collect several inches of "muck" from the tank which smelt like sewage water. Without the skimmer I believe this would still remain in the tank and so would recommend using one to anybody!

I skim my smaller tank (20 gallon) but I keep a frogfish in there, so I want to keep the water as good as possible.

Edit

Had to add other on the vote as you don't have Tunze. Tunze or Deltec are the only two I tend to recommend.

I have an AquaC Remora which, as you can guess from my choices offered, I only use if I see a problem. That is, if I goofed up in the past and needed to rescue my tank (eg, a dying sea star). Overall, I don't skim and stay with weekly 10% water changes. The best way, IMO, to keep your nitrates at zero outside of the water changes and not overfeeding, is to keep a well-lit refugium.

I use a skimmer, fuge and GFO on my overstocked 33 gallon but will probably use a fuge alone or add GFO to my 20 gallon. I tried to build a skimmer "for the hell of it" but it's capacity will, by design, be limited.

I keep a DIY skimmer on my 5g...it doesn't collect much because there's not much in the tank, but I think it's really helped the overal stability. That tank's never had any crashes or other large disasters since I set it up. I don't use a skimmer in any of my other tanks though, although I may be putting one in my new hermit tank because of how much meaty food has to go into that one.

Wow thats one serious frog fish you have there :)

And I dont skim my 25g But would consider it if I started having issues.

I skim my 20 gal Nano, with the RED SEA PRIZM DELUXE and although its really (really) loud it works fab! It removed loads of thick brown/green/yellow muck and my tank has no fish.

Wow, interesting results early. Although the "n" is still low, I would not have expected so many skimmers in use on nano tanks
