I've just been to a LFS in Reading and they had an incredible fish that I've never seen before - but no label.

It was very similar in shape to a freshwater angel, around 10" tall, black with orange edging to the fins.

Anyone want to take a guess as to what it was?

a orange tipped angel?? :hey:

Blue ring Angel?

SBS - I've posted in the marine section on purpose for this one.

found it! It's a batfish

never seen one before, in person or otherwise.

Dusky batfish Platax pinnatus?

Never seen one in an LFS, but I have seen them on the reef. Stupid things tend to swim up alongside your facemask. Scares you to death when you turn your head and it's half an inch from your nose.

stunning fish how much was it Stu?

Oh my goodness! I have never seen a fish like that before

They are awesome; they're in loads of my old aquarium books. Imagine how tall they would be when they were 18" from head to tail though! :hyper:

no label so no price. Was busy in there and had my kids......so no time to chat to the staff.

if they are that comfortable approaching divers, I'm surprised I've not seen or heard more about them. Mind you, if they get to 18" tall then there's not many tanks that would do them justice I suppose.

I've seen these in my lfs and they are stunning but like you said you would want a lot of height for them to look comfortable

Like the spotted sweet lips

Reading them up, apparently they're not so good at travelling, so often don't make it as far as the LFS's, need a very tall tank, and hate anything hassling them that might nip fins. Overall that probably explains why we don't see them very often.
