Hi ^-^;

My name is Melissa,i'm 22...from Newfoundland& I just recently joined the forum.
vegetarian& love all animals (also fishies!!)
The pets I have are: 2 dogs (Baby Dusty.."Dusty" & Reo Patriot... "Reo")
1 budgie (Petey),1 cockatiel (Madeline..yes they live seperate),2 red ear slider turtles (Tiesto& Adrian),
2 rats (Sakura& Tenshi),2 mice (Shakira& Chihiro),2 leopard geckos (Geico& Asda),5 hermit crabs (they need names  ),1 rabbit (Buster),1 pet rooster (Tazer),1 snow corn snake (Cosmo),1 female betta (Metric),1 pepper corydora (Pepper) & 1 albino corydora (Digit) & 2 platys (which need names!! ^^; )

I'm new to aquarium keeping.I want one full of live plants!
It's not going too well at the moment, plus it's a 20gallon,so not too difficult of a project.

I'm hoping this site can help me create my dream aquarium.
Very nice to meet all of you in advance. :good:

^^ P.S. I <3 anime& manga.Japan animation is the best =]

welcome to the forum:) nice to meet you too :)

Welcome!! I'm from Canada as well... the first thing you need to do is cycle your tank if you haven't yet... it's really important for your fish and without it they might die. I also suggest getting more of the same species of corys (2 more peppers and 2 more albinos) and to change the platys with something ese because the betta might get annoyed by them soon. Bettas prefer to stay alone, there aren't many fish they go well with. Once again, :hi: to Tff!! I'm sure you'll find lots of help here ^_^

Thanks guys!! :)
Yeah my aquarium is cycled,my only problem was the lighting :(
I use Bio-Spira...which is to be placed in the filter..because if you put it just in the water, you'll have to still wait weeks :D (I made that mistake first)

My female betta don't really seem to mind the platys at all,I did however used to have a male that couldn't stand them.
Some bettas are a hit& miss when it comes to certain fish.
That's not necessarily true though with bettas. It's their name (Siamese Fighting Fish) that gives them a bad reputation.
2 male bettas are a definate no-no.same with 2 female Bettas.
Females should be kept in groups of at the very least 3 if you want to house them together.
Uneven numbers are best as well.
& Male& female bettas shouldn't be housed together unless you want to breed them,& after that takes place they must be seperated again.
They actually thrive in a community tank, but you have to be careful what you choose.
Since you're right, they won't get along with everything.
& Some fish will attack their beautiful finnage!
& I always recommend lots of hiding places for any fish.
It's nice to get away from the others for awhile.

I was thinking of getting a couple more corydoras, with 5 fish now, thats almost stocked for a 20 gallon.
So I should invest in the corydoras next time I see them ^_^
1 gallon per inch of fish + substrate& decor needs to be taken in account when choosing how many fish you can have.
I've had all these fish for awhile,I just had to restart over my planted aquarium due to being an idiot over the lighting
-_-
Now that problem is almost solved though,so i'm happy about that :good:

I also want to add,I'm glad you mentioned cycling.
It's really cruel to add fish to an un-cycled tank :good:

I love this forum already.I was on a couple other forums in the past& they had awful info& told people that in 10gallons you could have like 25 fish etc. That was insane!

hi,im angelfishyfriend and i keep goldfish i wondered if anyone knows about cold water plecos because id like to learn a bit more about them they do seem quite friendly to other species of coldwater fish but it seemed to me that it only sucked on the tank in one exacly place on the left bottom side of the tank it seemed wiered is it just not used to other fish or is it just not that confident in the tank . ifanyone knows about this please tell me thanx 4 reading

Plecs are tropical dude. However, I've seen them at walmart in goldfish tanks.

I want to compliment you on your avatar.. If that is you... all i can say is WOW! :hey:

This is a great site with a lot of great info. Have fun :good:

Good to see you know your bettas... but, yes, they are actually solitary fish-they live alone in the wild and don't often like fast fish or brightly colored ones so you do need to be careful. A lot of bettas would prefer having their own tank because they are territorial.
Sounds like you did your research before getting fish-that is great! Not many newbies do :)
