Over the last 4 days I have had my three platys die. The first death occurred after one had been acting "strange" for a week-pouting around the bottom and keeping his fins slicked back. I treated him with salt and separated him but there were no marks on his body. I eventually just released him back into the tank and the next morning he was dead. The following day I found his "best friend" (another male platy) dead and the female platy hiding. Yesterday I did a VERY thourough cleaning of the tank and checked all the water levels (all fine). The female platy seemed much happier. This morning I found her dead.

None of the dead platys have had any marks on their bodies or any signs of disease or parasites. They were all eating fine and acting normally (other than the first one) as of the night before. I have no platies remaining in the tank, but my other fish (guppies and gouramis) are all acting and look completely fine. All of the platies have been in the tank for about 4 months, but were bought from different original tanks. My tank has slightly hard and alk. water, but the levels have been constant since the fish were introduced.

Any ideas on what happened? Should I/Can I do anything to protect the remaining fish?

Hrm.

You said you took the platties from other tanks. Any chance that they were diseased? Did you check for a nitrite spike? The only thing with a spike is all your fish would be acting similar to the platty's.

The exact samething happen to my sunset platty's. They were fine and every morn. when I would get up one was dead...no marks no nothing...I have 2 left a red platy and one sunset male. I have no clue what happen...all the rest of my fish r fine. I lost 4 female platy's in 4 days. srry 4 ur loss

No its completely mysterious.

No nitrite spikes, no chem changes that I can detect...nothing. And while I did get the 3 from different tanks at the fish store (although they were all added on the same day), they have been in this tank for about 4 months so I would think if a disease had been introduced it would have come out earlier.

Luckilly all my other fishies are doing fine.

Very strange....
