Hi all, im from the uk and new to posting on the forum, ive always come here for info but only as a browser. Its Great.

Ive just got two HM Males last week after searching far and wide. One was not in tiptop condition when i got him but he seemed lively and he seemed to like me so i took him anyways. Since bringing him home a week ago he hasnt had much of an appetite, hes eaten some live bloodworm and a few brineshrimp from frozen, he seems lethargic and his fins seem to be stiffening/rolling and have got darker in colour. I dosed his bowl with melafix when i got him home due to the fin damage he already had but hes just got worse since. tank stats are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 5 nitrate, ph 7.0. Although the temp has been at 73-74 which has v recently (today) been rectified and is now settled at 78. Take a look and tell me what you think.

This is the day i got him, hes in a breeding trap whilst i readied his bowl, i was at first worried about the patch pointed out??

And this is him now, sorry about the poor pic quality, but notice his fins seem smaller and tightened up. Even when i let him see floyd (the other male) the dark parts stay stiff and hes no longer showing HM spreadage, hows that for teminology, lol.

And heres a few of Floyd whos doing fine, i think hes got a sprinkle of CT in his genes, but hes great and has a brilliant personality.

Any help is appreiciated, thanks, Lee.

Welcome to TFF :)

Both are nice boys.
My guess would be he has sticky fins.
Treatment for this is debatable and variable.

My first advice is to make sure he is not in a small home, saying a bowl naturally makes people think it is under 1 gallon.
And let him see the other betta or his own reflection often.
The more he flares the more his fins will be exercised.
Also ensure his water is clean.

I am sure many more people will welcome and advise you.

the new guy looks like hes in a bowl. how are you heating it? As far as I know fins tend to clump and drop as a result of poor water quality. How often do you do water changes? Hmmm im no expert yet though :) the other guy is fab!

The bowl is about 8-9 litres, im using a 25w heater and a sponge air pump powered filter. And floyd is in a 10litre aquastar tank. Ive changed water twice this week, about 30-40%.

Im hoping him now having heat he'll start to get better. But id rather act fast if theres something i can do for him.

thanks.

Same as above!!! If he's in a bowl he'll need regular water changes every couple of days depending on the size of bowl. It can take quite a while sometimes to unstick so if you can get on top of it now before it gets any worse then all the better. The temps you had were very low which can lower their immune systems and make them lethargic so try to keep his temps up around 27c for the moment.

As Joshy said....let him see the other male a few times a day for just 10-15 mins each time to help exercise and open his fins up.

It doesn't sound like the bowl is filter so maybe pop in an airstone but just have it gently bubbling away....we have found this to help in the past when one of ours suffered from sticky fins.

Main thing though again is clean water is a must to prevent this from happening!!!

Good luck with them.....they are both gorgeous boys.

Oops typed to slowly. I see now that you have a filter in :good:
