MY TOP FIVE RULES FOR BEGINNERS

I would change number 4 - do a fishless cycle.

Great list. I would suggest 2 changes:

On #2, I know you have commented on this statement but I think it's great advice. The part lumping them all into the same catagory though is off. Before you buy from one, I would do enough research to learn the answers to a couple good questions like are fish A and fish B compatible? Can I put them in the same tank. Test the LFS employee to see how knowledgable he/she is. Then you will have a better idea of their knowledge.

On #3, I would say buy a LIQUID test kit. they are so much more accurate than strips.

yea i take that offensivley i work at a chain store! we care about our fish and our costumers! so yea please remove that one! how about you put dont trust petsmart petcoi and walmart!!! they want your money not us! we want to see our fish leave us and go to happy homes! and we know what we are talking about!

It's obvious that any fish store employee who frequents these forums cares for the fish, but whether you like it or not, you are the minority. That should not be removed because it stands as good advice despite that it offends a few lfs employees.

even if you test your lfs employee and he/she proves themselves knowledgable that does not mean they won't rip you off. Smart does not equal honest. They may know 100X more about fish than you do and they may very well use that knowledge against you. so that rule is a GOOD one. you can't tell if you can trust an lfs employee just by asking some tough questions. I am not saying that all lfs employees are evil satanic liars. What I'm saying is that you cannot tell which ones are and which ones aren't so your better off doing your own research and then verifying it through your lfs employee.

BTW I bought my fish from a mom and pop shop and they robbed me blind.

Until you get some knowledge of your own, you will have to research your fish. It's trus that some of the LFS will sell you what ever they can even if they know you shouldn't put 2 bettas in the same tank (undivided) together just because they want the sell. Only time will tell you whether they can be trusted. As for robbing you on pricing, it's always best to buy hardware online (probably won't find glass tanks online, only acrylic). You can get it for over 50% off what the LFS sell it for, filters especially.

I wasn't talking about getting ripped off on price. I got ripped off on fish. I have to buy a larger tank because of what they sold me.

hmm lets see how would you feel if someone said horrible things that offended you... oh wait your just the minority so it wouldnt matter!!! weither you "like it or not" its true! its doesnt "stand" as good advice!! ppl should get to know there LFS before they go of and believe this crap!!

the comment on lfs employees should deffinatly stay.

anyone who takes offence at that should grow up. of corse there are knowledgable employess in some lfs and chain stores, but as i rule i would still say don't trust any (at least until they prove themselves).

remember this is aimed at total newbies, its easy for someone to be mistaken and take really bad advice by some kid who works in petsmart on saturdays who doesnt know his arse from his elbow.

Its a good rule.

So you are telling me that it's better to go into a fish store, ask what I need to know, accept the persons answer and buy what they tell me.

Or, as an alternative, I can do a little work, research everything I need to know, go to the store, buy what I need, and go home. Hmmm.....
