Ok, I'm really new to the fish scene and knew absolutely NOTHING when my mother bought the tank for my daughters 4th birthday...
Wasn't even a hobby that I was interested in,(UNTIL NOW, I'm hooked  )
Read the instructions when I set up the tank,it said wait 24 hours before adding fish and of course it's really hard for a 4 year old to look at a fishless aquarium (me too) so we went and bought fish after a couple of days & previously adding my betta 1st. Still knowing nothing mind you. The chic at the fishstore gave me a brief run through of cycling but I still didn't get it and they said to only add a few fish so we bought 6 little ones (plus the betta who was already in the tank) so about 3 weeks later I was told that it was cycled when I brought my water in to see if we could add more fish yet, so it's cycled, that means I could add more fish right? BIG MISTAKE, little did I know that it does the mini cycle with each load you add and Oh Boy did we add a load! I've learned a lot since then and I've tried to be patient and do everything right, no casualties so that's good, but we're slightly bordering being overstocked and NOW 8 weeks later, 11 weeks total, my nitrites FINALLY tested at zero today, they hung out at 0.25 mark FOREVER and the water was cloudy and at some points I was just ready to cry and put an ad in the paper stating "free tank, fish and all, come and get it" but I toughed it out and YAAAAAYYY!!! I made it! Happy Happy Joy Joy!!!! :D

Wuv,
You said you was borderline on beig overstocked.....its fine to be that way but you have to be careful. You need to do your water tests more often to make sure that you are staying in safe zones. The reason for my saying this is with the extra load you need to make sure your biological filtration is working properly, as the extra fish cause extra waste and you know the story....lol

Congrats on getting you tank settled and good luck on the fishies

Your absolutely correct and luckily I bought a test kit a few weeks ago and now I'm addicted to testing my water
I think I slowed my cycle down a bunch by doing water changes too often during the cycle & foolishly vacuuming THEN changing water (removing a LOT of bacteria) But I also upgraded my filtration to a bio wheel 170 so I think that helped a lot too but in all, I have to give the credit to "cycle" I tried stress zyme to save a couple of bucks and it did nothing so I bought some cycle last week and viola!

Thanks for the encouragement! :D :D :D

Wuv,
I meant to ask last night if you had live plants in your tank or not. Live plants help a bunch by using the waste and excess food and such from your substrate. Even a couple three swords will help out alot. Just thought I would mention it and give you something to think about

It's such a great feeling when a tank finally cycles, fishies are happy, and everythings going well. Makes all the effort put into starting a tank worthwhile

I agree gad, and it's along awaited feeling in my case :D
Yes Les I have about 30 + plants in there and they've done great from the beginning, they had a LOT of waste as fertilizer (as you can imagine) :)
Now I can't wait to get started on my next tank, I think I'm going to go for a hexagon shaped one this time, I love those and I really don't have the space for anything with too much length
yaaay ,I'm still stoked about my cycle being over, I woke up this morning and tested it again just to make sure I wasn't dreaming
