having a sump doesnt increase the living area for the fish, its still overcrowded.

Well, he must be doing something right to keep them all together!

Thanks for all the comments, it does appear to be overstocked i agree, but this system has been running for 3 years now, albeit in 2 different tanks but the first tank was the same size - exactly the same fish and equipment. I have never run my tanks in the 'normal' way, i tend to find my own way with what works for me, i would not advise anybody other than those who are prepared to do the maintenence and water changes to run a tank like this. It takes a lot of looking after.

I believe it... Have you been adding livestock slowly or did you put most of them in the tank in a short period of time?

The livestock was added slowly, i could not afford to buy all the fish in one go. Plus after each fish addition it gives the live rock chance to catch up with the extra bioload.
