My Tank Pics

I am taking them in good favor I was just correcting you is all about the anemone. I also just felt attacked about the whole fake plant thing I mean everyone has different ideas of what they like I understand that just seems like you guys were trashing the tank over the plants is all. sry for coming off as negative it wasn't the intent.

Hi,
I went to Hawaii for christmas and while snorkeling saw many different types of plants on the reefs. Many of the places I snorkeled had long leafy seaweed and bushier kelps and seaweeds. So to say that plants aren't native on reefs is although may not be in your picture of a reef, what really are on the reefs. I think that the plants make the vibrant colors of the fish stand out more, like the yellow tang.

I thought Cleaner Shrimps and Coral banded couldnt go together?

Interesting that you said that...last night the cleaner shrimp passed away. He had been acting kind of funny over the past couple of days and then passed suddenly. The Coral banded and our star fish had a nice snack. We're really bummed cause he was one of our favorites.

ummm....don't anenomes require lots of light too?

It depends on the variety. We were told the one we purchased only required normal tank lights. Aparently they were right...cause he has done extremely well so far. Though thought we were going to kill the dang thing during the first few days. When we first placed it in the tank, we had a heck of a time getting it out of the bag. Then there was this large disagreement w/i the family as to where it should be placed. In the end, we located him on the top of a rock so he would be closer to the light. That was a bad thing. Turns out they want to keep their foot out of light; in fact like burrying it in the sand. So he tried to reach the sand from the top of the rock. It was one heck of a long stretch for the poor thing...never made it. So we relocated the rock w/ him on it to its present location. Then he almost died b/c the water flow in the new location was not sufficient. Shriveled up, turned gray, and covered w/ mucus. Moved the water pump and he was better overnight. Then one of the kids move the pump, and yup...all shriveled up and gray again. Put the pump back and he was OK again overnight. Once he was doing better, he started pooping almost daily. That was another experience...! When it poops, it shrivels up like its dying again and spues crap out of its mouth. We have to remove this gunk w/ a net every time, then w/i a couple of hours he's back to normal again. Craziest dang thing I've ever seen. After the first week of figuring out the routine, he's been just like in the PICs cept when he as to poop.

I wonder to all anenomes behave like that...

We were fresh water fish tank people for more decades than I am willing to admit. The plant thing is a carry over from those days. When we first set up the tank it just didn't look right to us w/o some plants. You will find exceptions to the plant rule in nature as well. Regardless, it was good to know that plants do not normally exist in reef tanks. I'm not about to start taking a purest approach to this hobby... Just not our style. Appreciate the feed back.

Another interesting note here, our Yellow Tang was captured in the wild in Hawaii and shipped directly to our pet store. Thought that was neat...however the wife who has never been to Hawaii, and wants to go in the worst way did not appreciate the irony.
