My Tank Is A Nightmare! Neons Swimming Vertically?

The lumps on the belly are a big give away to ntd, that what I want to check.

If this disease can spread through all types of fish then there isn't much point in euthanising them is there they may as well just live out their infected days together?? Could this have been what killed my corys??

I take it that as and when they die off, I'll have to strip the tank, do I clean it with anything specific or just hot water? and will I have to cycle again??

I did ask in a thread ages ago about neon tetra disease as one of them seemed to have a bubbly tummy, but then I noticed that they all did just after they ate, and then it went away again, I put it down to them having full tummys. Naieve.....yep that's me!!

Yes it can affect alot of fish they all go one by one.
Bleach but rinse it well, even have to sterlise the filter, i did that in hot salty water and then ran it a few times in clean water, and left to dry out completely for a day.
Don't keep the spongres through them away, and the substrate.
Yes looks like you will be doing a cycle again.
Quarantine all new fish for 3 weeks.
When you first get started again don't add anymore fish for six weeks.

kerching....kerching....kerching :-(

God they will see me coming, so I'll have to do another cycle then?? Nice.... this is the first tank I managed to get cycled properly.

My husband will be laughing at me, cos I've worked so damn hard at trying to keeping these fish alive, buying all the medicines, sponges, additives, fish, and not the right ones, I have spent a small fortune and for what, one dodgy fish which wipes my whole tank out!!! Aaaaaagggggggh :grr:

Don't feel bad. My wife is definitely not pleased with the effort I put into my fish. Every time a fish dies for whatever reason, I get ribbed because of the money I've spent on medicines and uv steliziers and whatnot.

Same here, but for the last year and half hardly now any fish deaths anymore.
Adding to many fish to fast, and quarantine is the way to go.

:-( Going to bed now, thanks for your help and support guys :-(

Good night loobie.

awww love, sorry to hear you've had so many problems, please don't be disheartened this isn't your fault.

i had a similar problem a few years ago, I had a lovely tank with 6 angels in, it was just getting started and looking really good, everyone was healthy and I loved it, was my first step away from a community tank. Then I bought a pair of angels riddled with disease although they showed no signs in the shop, within a week everything in the tank was dead save 1 angel. :-( just went through them so quickly and nothing i tried to treat them worked.

I was really gutted but you just have to pick yourself up and start again :/

I've replied to your pm about some mature media, your more than welcome to some :good: just give me a shout when yuo need it.

Scrub & then soak your tank & equipment with a Potassium Permanganate solution & it will kill EVERYTHING. :hey:

get some from www.gardendirect.co.uk

Andy

PS
Don't get it on your mits...

Ok, now I'm well confused. :S

They're all still there, but, I've had a good look in the tank this morning and it looks as though a colouring fairy has come during the night and coloured in the black bits on the harlequins and made the red bits on the neons a little brighter (still faded but better than last night), and they're not swimming vertically??! :shout:

I'm sure I haven't dreamt all this. I'll have another look tonight and see if it happens again.

Should I keep medicating or is it not worth it??

Hi,

Do you think the meds are making the fish better? Don't stop your course of meds just because things are starting to improve.

Andy

Hi,

yeah it's like if the doc gives you antibiotics and you feel better after a few days, you still need to keep taking them for the whole course.

if you think you've identified the problem and that the meds are helping then stick at it and see how you go.

:)

Things weren't getting better, if anything they were getting worse, as my neons were 'hanging' in the tank!! I wasn't sure if it was the meds that was causing my fish to swim vertically, so I'm a bit unsure if it's a good idea to continue, but I am. :grr:

Anyway I have been looking at them and all seems well, grouping together, swimming horizontally, big bellies but that's because I've just fed them, chasing after one another, seem alot better than last night. ;)

Don't know what's going on with the colouring thing though it seems to have come back , and they look fine.....apart from one of my harlequins, I have noticed a blood spot on his/her belly, I can't really get a good look cos it moves so damn fast, darn that fish!!!! :sly:

I don't think I need to do anything cos I'm treating my tank with melafix and pimafix and have been doing since last friday, that should take care of it......shouldn't it??

Thanks for last night though guys I took the whole veritcal thing rather hard, but feeling a little more positive tonight. Hope I don't speak too soon but I'll check them again before I go to bed and see if it happens again. :)

When fish lose colour its a sign of stress and illness.
The bloodspot is septicemia on the neon, does the neon still have the bleached out tail area.
