Started this as an alternative to breeding my zebras/tetras/angels/blue rams/etc because i dont have the time to be raising those type of fish cause summer is over and its back to college :( but the ease of live bearers is awesome and its fun :D
Here is a picture of the first stage of my platy breeding area. I have this tank in my room (along with my 36 gallon bow) so its easy to keep a close eye on the mothers and fry, and i have 3 more tanks in the garage that i move the fry to once the next batch starts rolling through and need the room. I am using 3 adult females with 1 male so i am constantly getting new fry (just had another batch today). Once they get up to selling size I bring them to my LPS to trade in for cash or supplies.

I have the males and females in my 36 gallon tank to swim freely and have all the swimming room they want in a community tank, and i observe them until i can start to see the little black eyes in the bellies (babies!!!) and once she starts to look very plump i remove her from the large tank and place her in the floating breeder in my 10g. Once she pops i immediately remove the fry into another floater so she cant eat them, then let her rest for a while and put her back into the large tank.

Sometime this week im going to the local shop to pick up a few different colored platy females for my male to breed with. I wanna make some variations in color.

let me know what you think.

Rather impressive. I too breed sunset platys, although not on purpose, and i certainly don't have that many tanks set out for it. She just pops them out and i see how the fry fare :p

I suppose it can be a nice little side earner can't it. Its worthwhile investing the time into if you have the space/money to get a small breeding set up going.

thank you :D I was able to come up on a really good deal on 3 full tank setups so i knew i could use them for breeding or quarantine tanks and i put them in the garage. There is just something about watching "nature". I come home from a long day of school or work and i just sit down in front of my tanks for a bit and just watch "life". It helps relax me, and if i can find a way for it to pay for itself (i.e. raising the babies and selling them) there is nothing better lol

Personally i would not sure the traps. I rear all my fry along side the adults.
I only trap if it's a rare livebearer that need help, as many eat their fry.

Still you got a nice setup and it's clearly working well for your self.

Looks good :good:

Good luck with selling them, lfs by me are meanies and wouldn't give anything for my juvi's when they were ready for selling.

You obviously enjoy breeding them, good luck with them all :)

i have had luck without the floating breeders, but i just want to maximize the survival rate by removing the possibility of the adult eating her babies.

I cannot wait to get some new females to breed with my male.

How about this!

You guys give me suggestions on what type of females to purchase from the pet shop and do crosses with and ill raise the young and keep this blog going on what they look like!

this is amazing, i have four platys, but dont know which is male and which is female...alos how would i tell the sex and if ones pregnant

The underside of the male comes to a point and almost looks like a rod/penis, if there are just regular shaped fins underneath then its a female.

also you will begin to notice the female gaining size and roundness as she progresses through her pregnancy, i havent seen other platies but my females are somewhat transparent so i can see the babies in her belly (dead giveaway is seeing black dots.. those are baby eyes!)
