Started this as an alternative to breeding my zebras/tetras/angels/blue rams/etc because i dont have the time to be raising those type of fish cause summer is over and its back to college but the ease of live bearers is awesome and its fun
Here is a picture of the first stage of my platy breeding area. I have this tank in my room (along with my 36 gallon bow) so its easy to keep a close eye on the mothers and fry, and i have 3 more tanks in the garage that i move the fry to once the next batch starts rolling through and need the room. I am using 3 adult females with 1 male so i am constantly getting new fry (just had another batch today). Once they get up to selling size I bring them to my LPS to trade in for cash or supplies.
I have the males and females in my 36 gallon tank to swim freely and have all the swimming room they want in a community tank, and i observe them until i can start to see the little black eyes in the bellies (babies!!!) and once she starts to look very plump i remove her from the large tank and place her in the floating breeder in my 10g. Once she pops i immediately remove the fry into another floater so she cant eat them, then let her rest for a while and put her back into the large tank.
Sometime this week im going to the local shop to pick up a few different colored platy females for my male to breed with. I wanna make some variations in color.
let me know what you think.
