Just tested my water for the first time since I added my firefish on monday (slack, I know!) I seem to have raised ammonia and nitrate!

pH 8.0
Ammonia 0.25
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5.0

The above are all API still

Phosphate 0 - saifert

So did I add the firefish too soon after the clowns do you think, I waited a week, and stats were stable before I added him.
I'm just waiting for some water to mix for a WC anyway, I did 60L last time, but my stats were all 0 then, should I change more this time, or will that stress my fishies!?

HD - you shouldnt have any ammonia - whats occuring? Have you added any new live rock, had a death?

You can do another wc but I would just hold fire and test for amm and trite for now.

If you have water mixed ready then if the amm rises then you could always transport your livestock into a tub with fresh saltwater with heat an flow until the LR sorts itself out.

Apart from the firefish has anything else been added recently?

I don't think it can be the rock? The last LR I added was 2 weeks ago, it only left water for litrally seconds as i lifted it out of the tub i transported it in, into the tank, and my stats were fine all week after that.. Surely if it was the LR I'd have noticed changes in that week?

I added the LR and 2 emerald crabs on 10th, then clowns on 11th, and then the firefish on 18th.

Repeat gives the same results!

I dont suppose I could be over feeding? I alternate between giving 3 flakes one day, and then about 1/6 of a cube of frozen mysis the next?

That should be fine.

Might be worth having your water tested at your lfs using a different testkit just to confirm.

My LFS uses API kits too, I saw them testing someones water last time I was in there! I keep meaning to get some salifert ones from the internet, phosphate was the only one LFS had!

Wheres the cheapest place to get saliferts? If I order some now, hopefully they'll be here by tuesday :S

Right, salifert ammonia and nitrate kits ordered! I'll have to keep track with my api's till they arrive, if it does go higher, how high is TOO high, and would require the fish to be moved?

ANY trace of ammonia is bad HD but if it gets any higher then get your livestock outta there until you get it either re tested or the reading drops to zero.
If your getting a reading for amm then expect one for nitrite afterwards so might be worth testing for that too.

Forgot to say any chance you could post a pic of the results [the sample and the chart] so we can give a 2nd opinion!

My nitrite is still 0 atm, that'll be the next test I buy.. can't afford 3 of those things at once! Well, I could, but I couldn't find any more money through all the moths and cobwebs in my purse!

I dont get why I've got ammonia in the first place tho!! Could it be anything to do with the shells I added a few days ago? I boiled them, then rinsed in RO water before they went in!

I would say .25 Ammonia would kill a dartfish, I rec it's a bad reading!!
