My Shrimp

i have a lone Amano (getting some more when i actually find them again) and he is always out and about in my 15 gal, the only tank mates are guppies and neons although he has lived with female bettas and various othe fish in the past

my tank has bog wood and quite a few plants which the shrimp loves climbing though, so i reckon more decore is the way forward :good:

My shrimp have decided they like the open world of my tank, all 4 of my Amano shrimps are out and about on my plants and on the outside of the castle, maybe it was because they shed thier shells they hid away for a while, do they shed montly? maybe i will find around this time they will hide again.

I must say they are a joy to watch..

As for my 2 red ones, I have only seen one that has decided to come out, the other one i have not seen for about a week, i wonder if he is still alive? I have alot of rocks to the back to my tank which they live in and i dont really want to disturb these so see if he is still alive.. any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi

I am quite new to fish keeping, and a couple of weeks ago i got, 3 algee eating shrimps and a cherry red shrimp since having these, the 3 Algee eating shrimps have hid away in a castle we have in the tank and never come out (they did shed there skins last night) and the red shrimp hides under a plant we have and we never see him, is this because we need to get more? Are they shy? Will they ever come out?

Thanks

IMO, the shrimp will be much happier with no fish in the tank at all. Cherry shrimp will certainly breed, but the babies will be eaten by almost any fish. They are tiny to begin with.
Don't boil the cucumber, that will remove all the goodness from it. Thin slivers of raw cucumber will sink on its own after a few hours. Also add a leaf or two of spinach [pour boiling water over it first , leave for 30 seconds, cool and add]. Also oak or beech leaves that have been soaked for a few days in cold water.
The best food is 'Ocean Nutrition' Shrimp Wafers. They sound very expensive, but a small tub will last you a year or more, so not that expensive in the long term. Shrimps go crazy for this stuff..!

Hi really am greatful for all your replies.. :good:

Last night I saw the other red shirmp poke his out of from the rocks, so at least i know he is alive, maybe he was hinding because he was shedding his shell?

If they had babies would they lay the egg under the rocks? My fish cant get under the rocks so would the egg survive...thats of course if they do lay any eggs, what are the chances of this happening?

Thanks

The females carry the eggs :) You might be lucky enough to see sometime, at first they appear as a stripe on their back...then then pass them under their swimmers (the little flappy bits underneath) and the shrimplets appear as tiny tiny versions of mum and dad!

The male is smaller and less colorful than the female. The male's tail, not being needed to carry eggs, is thinner. The female is larger and displays a much darker and more extensive red color, and often has a "saddle" marking of developing eggs.

having said that, i can't tell the difference between an un saddled female and a male!
