Well this has been such a learning experience. I first started with a 29g tank with nothing but live rock, live sand and 2 fish.. The tank was overrun with algae. I had no knowledge of reef tanks at all and the tank was covered in hair algae. I saw the algae and thought it was hopless. I now realize that I could have saved all that live rock and sand but instead I tossed it. ( I sttill cringe when I think of that).

Here is the picture of the tank I got from my brother.

After doing some research and realizing that starting something you have no knowledge about is the worste thing you can do! It cost me a lot of money having to go and buy all new live rock. Before i learned about LR i thought why on earth would some aquarium rock cost anymore than a few dollars! And I am still a complete newbie making bad mistakes but I am learning.

My next step was researching everything I could!
Lighting was going to have to remain what It was just one 65 watt 10k pc and one 55 watt actinic pc. for a grand total of 120 watts of pc lighting. I bought 2 new powerheads and a protein skimmer. I bought live rock and live sand. I bought mushrooms and some LPS. 2 cleaner shrimp, and some fish. This was all over a period of about 11 months. I only lost one fish in the 29g and one cleaner shrimp. I had a battle with red slime, and I struggled with low lighting but other then that nothing bad happend oh except the time my heater broke and i touched the water and got a major shock!. I was lucky.

This is what my 29 gallon tank last looked like.

Last month on a whim I decided to go bigger!

I purchased a 40 gallon breeder tank and a new stand. I also upgraded my lighting to a coralife aqualight pro 36". Things are still settling in. I lost another fish due too 2 mantis shrimps that came as hitchkikers. The fishes jaw got split in half! I still have my same skimmer a seaclone :/
It works okay but not as good as a higher quality one.

So here are some pictures from my new tank!

Well thats all!

WOW, what can i say! I bet your brother is SOOO jealous of what could have been!
Bummer about throughing away that LR! I would have nightmares over that evrynight! LOL. Bummer about your fish loses but all have been reasonably minimal compared to alot of people! Loooks like youre doin a top job! congrats!

(It was a heavy strain on the computer but well worth it! ) :p Miagi!

Job well done...kudos for keeping up and going despite the adversity.....tanks look beautiful. SH

Both tanks are truely awesome!
I very pleased that somebody didnt just give up and pack the hobby in when the difficulties arrived. Research perciverance (and a bit of cash) really paid off. I can see from the photos that you have come along way in their abilities and you should be very proud of the fantastic achievements you have accomplished in both tanks.

your tanks look great, but that sucks about the lr, i would of shot myself in the foot about that. my tank currently looks exactly like the first pictures on your post. i scrub the algae off the rock with a toothbrush and scrape it off the glass.
but it grows back WHITHIN A DAY!!!!!!!!! im sick of it and its killing my yellow polyps. so i developed a battle plan to knock out algaes favorite nutrient.. you guessed it (PHOSPHATE) my weapons of choice . phosphate test kit, phosban filter media, phosbuster pro, and purple up, the plan was to eliminate the incredibly high phosphate.(the test kit showed 5 ppm the highest it can measure) with the phos ban in the filter with carbon and adding phosbuster pro directly in the aquarium, after that ill add purple up to increase coraline algae growth on the LR
(the good stuff)and the algae should be easier to controll. i am currently in the middle of the battle. i was wondering if you or anyone else out there had anny battle tactics in clearing all that pest algae from that first tank. please reply

Sounds like you have had a tough time so far. THings are not lost though and i am sure that a solution canbe overcome.

If you would like to post your query again in a seperate post I am sure many (includingmyself ) will be more than glad to give our experiences and suggestions to you. I dont want ot stary off from the thread here as its a tank diary for a member and i can see how easily this thread will move from its desired intention by going down the route of solving your algae probs.

Im sure we can help though so post again please ;)

Wow! It really looks amazing in there - congratulations, your hard work sure has paid off!! :fun:
