i have just about finished my fishless cycle and for 3 days i have had a red claw crab in my 260 liter aquarium and today i introduced a pair of silver dollars and a pair of golden severums and from advice i have been told to get rid of my crab :byebye:
is their no way they can be kept togther - the crab spends most of his time on top of the filter and the bogwood that sticks out of the water
advice grateful thanks

arent those fish freshwater?

and arent those crabs brackish water? as my boyfriend got a couple and put them in the tropical tank and the next day they died. apparently they needed brackish water but he thought theyd be okay!!

you might find fish being attacked.

plus it might just stress the fish out a bit. not sure.

well ive had mine for 4 days now and i got it from a friends tropical tank and he has had it for 2 months so they are freshwater

Red Claw Crabs arent brackish, mine lives happily in my community tank.

He gets on fine with the fish (except at feeding time when they try and eat his food)

He is doing really well, and has shed his skin twice already, he is growing quickly.

I love him, his name is Sebastian.

They are brackish animals. They can get lucky and live for some time in freshwater, but they will doubtfully last much longer.

Red claws need brackish water to survive in the long run. Denying them that is cruelty and dooming them to an early death. Just because they can survive in freshwater for a while doesn't mean they can forever.

He needs a specialised tank, with access to land and brackish water(SG1.003-5).

ok im not an expert at this. What is brackish water and how do you get it?

Brackish water is water that has salt in it, but not enough to be considered saltwater. Salt water has a SG(specific gravity) of 1.0026, fresh 1.0000.

To make brackish water you need to buy some marine salt mix(not table salt) and a tool called a 'hydrometer'. The hydrometer measures the SG of the water. Basically mix in a small amount of the salt then check the SG. If it's below the desired SG, add some more salt and measure again.

thanks and at the time freshwater is ok right

Short term it should be OK,but if the crab moults while it's in freshwater, it's far more likely to suffer moulting complications and either die or maybe just lose some appendages. This is less likely if your water is hard and alkaline, and very likely if it's soft and acidic.
