Hi everyone. I am new to livebearers and fish keeping in general. I got 2 female plays a couple weeks ago and they are both pregnant. Yesterday the one started to hide out in the plants and was breathing heavy so I thought she was getting ready to give birth. But this morning I woke up to her dead (still pregnant). I tested my water and ammonia and nitrite are at 0. The only thing I can think of is I did a water change a couple days ago and moved some things around while vacuuming gravel. Could I have stressed her out? Now I'm worried because my pregnant guppy is doing the same thing. She's hiding out and breathing heavy. The other platy seems fine and my other fish seem healthy. Also the dead platy looked normal. No apparent sign of death. I have 2 mollys that have given birth this week with no problem. I am not using any birthing boxes or traps because I don't want hundreds of babies. Right now I have 4 babies that I can see. Anyone know what may have happened to my platy?
Thanks.

Hi,
How long has the tank been running for?
What's the nitrate, pH, size of tank, temp, other tank mates and how many, frequency of water changes,
Thanks

Hi. The tank has been running a few months. The platys were added about 2 weeks ago. The nitrate is at about 5ppm I think (a very light orange with liquid test). The ph is 7.6. Size of tank is 30 gal. And temp. is 80f. I do a water change about twice a week and vacuum the gravel. I have 4 mollies (1 male 3 female), 2 guppies (1 male 1 female) and 1 female platy.
Oh and I also have 4 baby mollies 3 days old and 1 day old.

Sometimes females struggle giving birth. They can die from it, she could have been too small and couldn't get her babies out.

Bless Her.
R.I.P.
Increase aeration slightly.
Just check gills to see they don't look red and inflamed, look like there bleeding, excess slime on gills,
or gills sticking out.

Ya I think she was young she was small and I just got her from the pet store . I didn't see any bleeding or redness but she was a red fish so I could be wrong. Thanks for the replies!

How are the fish?
