I spent a good deal of money on a power filter. I think its meant for a bigger tank, since its just too powerful.

It uproots my plants and causes a great deal of havoc.

I have an idea to solve the problem though. What if I connect the plug of the filter to a fan regulator (basically, a rheostat). Then if I reduce the current, will the speed of the filter reduce?

I suggest you buying or building an extra nozzle to the output. There are two options basically; 1) A nozzle that lets you aim the water flow so you can aim it to the surface 2) a longer pipe with holes along it, this spreads the waterflow evenly and should substantially decrease the output flow without decreasing the intake.

Thats a pretty good idea  I'll try that. But I may not find a pipe that fits on the nozzle. This is a filter from a company called "Flowell". Anyone used it? I'll upload the pic in my next post. (My dad has taken the camera, he's at work)

I don't think using a power controller is a good idea. The way these brushless induction motors work, I suspect the thing will spin until there is not enough power then stop, rather then smoothly speed up and slow down.

What I do with my filters is take the end piece out of the spray bar, add a short length of tube then set a second spray bar in. If there is still to much agitation, I make more holes in the spray bar, or enlarge the existing holes to slow the water down.
