My Poor sweet Alfie!!

Just wanted to tell everyone my sadness at losing my little hamster baby who we named Alfie, he died this morning. He wasn't well on Monday but i couldn't get a vets appointment as they were doubled booked so i made one the following morning (tuesday) @ 9am. Vet examined him and said that his cheek pouch was full of food that he couldn't shift as it was compacted!!! and some how had got a cut on the inside of his mouth (unknown cause) so the vet emptied the pouch i thought the poor bugger's eyes were going to pop out, it looked very distressing for me, but Alfie seemed to be relieved in some way. Anyway he said that i could used the antibotic's i had left over from another hamster patient that didn't make it, (Baytril)? so i started him on the antibotic's the night before the vets and yesterday after coming home, also had to feed him Rehydration sachet to his drinking water and feed it by syringe myself. He seemed very spritely yesterday and it looked positive as he was climbing around on my sisters duvet when i got him to give him his meds which he wasn't fussed on.

Now i woke up at 5am he was fine just sat in his cage half asleep but breathing, at 9.20am i checked on him again and he was dead but not totally stiff, i was heartbroken!!! But in his mouth there was a green substance not sure if it was food stuck in his mouth or something else, so he could of choked and i wasn't there when he needed me and im kicking myself!!!

Haven't told me little sis yet, as she decided to adopt him and look after him herself, she was going to buy a nice cage for him today. We just loved him because he was different from the rest of the pack.

So now i'm left with 7 little critters, his brothers and sisters are greiving today.

I'm so sorry to learn of your loss. You did everything you could though.

Thanks Inchworm, i feel abit better, im still in shock abit, Can't believe he's gone from this world. The night before i held him in my hands and he was shivering uncontrollably (why was this?) i tried to keep him warm but his luck was running out fast.

Rest easy now little friend, your brothers and sisters miss you loads. I miss you too we had so much fun together.
