So yeah, started my pond the other day with with the help of my fiance and some friends/neighbours :) !
Firstly we had to go through the long process of checking out if there were any things like water pipes, electrical cables, gas pipes etc, but all was in the clear apart from the electrics. Apparently there was a big wire running through the garden, although the map they posted us was rather vague despite apparently being the most precise thing they could give us.
But after talking it through with a friend who has a lot of experience pond building and things, we went ahead with the digging- apparently it is very hard to cut through your standard underground cable with a spade, he said he'd work on the cable area though anyway as we had a rough idea at what depth it was at.
I was amazed at how much progress we all did together in 5 and a half hours work on the first day :blink: ! It was weird seeing my small bog standard garden suddenly starting to take shape into my dream garden :fun: !
Any, here's the pics so far :) ;
After having spray painted a rough line of the first part of the pond system, digging started;

Even the neighbours little staffy puppy helped out, she was full of energy as she has not been taken for walks yet as she is waiting to get her vacinations done (she's still too young) :wub: ;

My friend/neighbours daughter also tried to dig as well :lol: ;

The yellow dirt is actually raw clay, pretty heavy stuff to dig! On the other hand, it'll help support the sides of the pond when its dug :) ;

Second pond coming along nicely;

Huge pile of dirt building up from the digging- we are organising renting a skip on monday to put it in;

... ... ...

DAY TWO: Only a small amount of digging done as we were all still quite tired from the previous day, but we managaed to locate the electric cable (where the white lines are drawn);

PondDay2.jpg

The pile of rocks in the corner of the second pond is granite slabs we dug up- we havn't a clue what they were doing there, as granite doesn't naturally occur around our area so it must have been put there at some point. On the other hand it was a pain in the bum to dig out! Should be useful though at some point, might make a rockery or something out of it at some point :) ;

Peaceful moment- red currents rippening in the early summer sun;

I will keep you updated as much as i can, the weather is pretty bad right now though and looks like it'll continue its rainy trend for a while so i can't do anymore digging for now. We are planning on getting a new patio though done once the pond is finished, i'm not completely sure about the idea yet, but either way it would be nice to replace the 60's concrete slab paving thats currently in the garden :) .
We've ordered a skip to come in within the next couple of days so we can start moving the dirt we've dug up so far, as we cannot really do anymore serious digging on the pond until we've got rid of the current soil.

This is your second pond? My mom wont even let me build one! You are so lucky! Please keep us updated with pics becuase we all love pics!

Ah no, all this is the first pond work thats ever been done in the garden- we are digging two ponds connected to each other by two channels/stream things, you can see the first of the channels starting to take shape just across the path going up the middle of the garden. The second channel will also go across the garden path but will be dug much further up the garden closer to the summer house (Single room garden shed type building for chilling in) at the end of the garden :) .
I try and draw a map of the garden & pond design on the computer here at some point some so i can post it here to give you a better picture of the layout of the ponds :thumbs: .

Looking good, great idea linking the ponds in that way, although can make filtratrion a liltle trickier as silt will usually gather in the pond doesnt have pump in.

How big are the ponds going to be?

Right now the largest of the ponds is going to be about 10ft by 6ft and 4ft deep, the second is about 8ft by 6ft and 3ft deep. I'm still working on the linking idea, but for now after some long debating over the ponds we may just end up with one link... My fiance thinks the garden will end up looking like "water world" as he put it, so i have come to a compromise for now.
Basically, we are just having the one link between the ponds for now. The link between the ponds is already going to be 2ft wide, about 4ft long and 2ft deep, so is quite a sizeable one which will add a lot of gallons to the ponds total gallons. After getting the pond and garden finished, we will leave it at that for a fair while for things to settle down. Towards the end of this year we might start working on the second stream/channel/link thing, i'm hoping this is a "maybe yes" than a "maybe no" ;) .
The garden is mine, but my fiance's input is important none the less. We'll see how things go :good: .

I get some more pics up here tomorrow as we've done some more digging, we got a skip around the other day and have removed all the dirt dug up so far, so we need to get the skip emptied before we can do any serious digging done again :) .

Ah ha! I thought you were doing just a shallow stream in between them.

Should look great at the end.

Updates :) !
At first we made the sides too steep- if you make them too steep, the pond sides can cave in on themselves, so making them at an angle/slope is important. So we have to slice the sides of the pond and cut them back a bit to make them more at an angle;

PondDay3.jpg

After getting a skip, all the dirt we have dug up so far that piled up in the garden has now been removed :good: ;

PondDay3-1.jpg

The channel connecting the two ponds is beginning to take more shape now;

PondDay3-2.jpg

A nice ledge taking form in the first pond for putting pond plants on;

PondDay3-3.jpg

After some rain, and a couple of very hot dry days, the ledge has suffered and is now riddled with cracks making the clay brittle and hard to shape;

PondDay3-4.jpg

Side note- i know this is quite off-topic, but does anyone know what this plant is :unsure: ?;

Making the second pond larger to help accomodate shelves :D ;

The guys mucking around :fun: ;

A while back i picked up a PFK (practical fish keeping) magazine which came with an extremely handy extra magazine which had loads of articles throughout on pond digging, maintence and keeping;

Middle channel getting deeper- the path presented some obsticle, but we are replacing it anyway after the pond is finished;

I have been looking at pond liner and need your opinion on something: i have found some good pond liner but it is 3/4 of a cm thick, is this a good thickness for pond liner or not :unsure: ?

looking goood!
one day when i have my own house i'll build a pond and make a diary, give me a couple of years!

I'm guessing you have found Firestone liner then, which is the thickest you'll find in the UK. My ponds standard butyl which is .5mm I do believe.

How are you lining it? Are you doing it as one big liner or get 3 smaller pieces and join at the channel?

By the way, how bigs the whole thing? Max length, max width, max depth?
