I've got an 8" plec in a 120l (30ish gallon) tank.
I'm sure I already know the answer but is this enough room for him?
Here's a few pics of him, I think he is a common plec.
My Plec 3 My Plec 2 My Plec 1
There's about 22" of other fish in there (tetras and platys)

Cheers
Jon

He's a common plec, so expect him to get somthing between 12 and 18inchs+- he is already too big for your tank, he will need somthing in the region of a 60-80gal tank although tank dimensions are most important than gals since he is a bottom dweller, surface area/length and width of tank is most important.

Yeah, thought so ... darn :( ... The tank is 36" x 12" and 18" high.
I've had him for a couple of years now...

I reckon I'll have to take him to the shop.
Do you think they are likely to take him in part payment for other fish?
A smaller variety of plec or some otos and some corys?

I really should have left it a little longer before thinking about replacing him :*)

It realy depends on the lfs, small lfs that are not a part of big chain companys are more likely to pay somthing for him or exchange him for some other fish or simply take him off your hands for free- most large chain stores though will take the fish and then flush it, although most will not accept fish at all.
Try to give your plec the home it needs if you can, even if its only a plastic tub, as he could end up in a similar tank to yours again or somthing smaller if he is sold from a lfs.

Hmmm ... My nearest lfs is a branch of Maidenhead Aquatics, I've only been in there a couple of times, as it's reasonably new and I've only recently found out about it, but it seems like a pretty decent store. Maybe I'll have a chat and sound them out about it. They do have a tank with a sign saying it's for fish who are unhappy in their homes.

As much as I would love (and i really would love) to have a tank 3 times as big as the one i've got I dont think it's gonna happen for a few years yet

In the mean time, are there any UK folk in or around the Oxford area, with a large tank, who would dearly love to look after an 8" common plec ?? Worth a try huh ;)

Thanks for the info T-P
Jon

Hi
I found my local maidenhead v good when changing to discus they accepted a variety of fish and
gave a third of their sale value in exchange. (Cardiff)

I guess nothing ventured, nothing gained :D

I'd love to take him. Really. But no room currently in any tank I have. Am hoping to have another biggish tank set up soon but that doesn't help you right now.
Best of luck.
Hugs,
P.

:) thanks anyway.
I think I'll try my lfs first, and then there's another not too far away ... depends what they say about how they treat them.
Thought about the plastic tub idea from T-P, but I don't trust Jack (our cat) not to find a way in there :look:
I've emailed the shop, but im actually on holiday for a while now, so he'll have to suffer a little longer, poor little ( I mean big) fella.
Cheers all
Jon

I had an email back from the manager at the Oxford Store, saying I could bring pleccy in anytime, which is cool B)
So I guess I'll do that after my boating holiday next week :hyper:
I take it you don't want an 8" plec then Kelly? :hey:
