My readings are

Nitirte 0
Ammonia 0
NitrAte 0
PH 6.8

I tested the water this morning, there was a slight reading of ammonia, and the ph was 7, so i did a 20% water change, and a couple of hours later i noticed my small Plec had died :-( Did the water change do this to him?? I have only had him a couple of days, and he was thriving !!

(correct me if i am wrong) but you were the one who used the prime red stuff? You are still getting no nitrites? Hmmm....How are the other fish behaving?

Claire, did you get a plec a couple of days ago? I thought you said you weren't going to get any more fish for a while. Basically, your tank needs time to settle down and the water stats to become stable. This is NOT the time to be buying more fish. Even if the Prime stuff had miraculously managed to sort out your urgent problems, the tank still needs to cycle with the current population.

Thanx everyone...

I did go to the LFS, and explain all this, i havnt used Prime for over 4 days now, and he tested my water, and said everything was fine if i wanted to add a plec, i explained i didnt want to put anything in if it was going to die, he said there was nothing wrong with my water for this to happen....

My water has been tested AGAIN today, and is still fine, all of my other fish are doing very well, they are all happy, eating and swimming about, so i dont know whats wrong, my tank has been set up for 7 weeks now... :/

internal bacterial infection can be quite common in plecs. Did you check to see if it had a red belly at all?

Ben

No i didnt check to see if it had a red belly... :-( It appeared fine, but not long after my 20% water change, i found it dead :rip: ????

My water stats appear fine, is my tank fully cycled or not??

Claire just remember that cycled doesn't mean "mature". Some fish need mature tanks or do better in mature tanks - that is generally over 6 months.

I know it might be very tempting to add more fish, but that is just not feasible with the kind of fish you currently have. Wait for a few months and see how things pan out.

Best of luck.

fish store people always say the water is fine for any fish you want to add

I've seen people walk out of stores with a new tank and a bag of fish.

don't listen to store personel. Buy your own test kits to test your water (this one ower once test my water afetr i setup my tank. He only tested for pH and told me all my stats were fine)

Get advice here, then walk in a store and get what you want and nothing else.

I must say not all fish stores are like that at all, in Quebec maybe, but in England there is usually a level of honesty and knowledge you can expect from someone in your LFS.

Where I work we do free water tests, done infront of them....

I wouldn't make a generalisation, because you offend the people like me, who actually work at fish shops and do my utmost to give the best advice i can to customers.

The LFS where i go, are very good, they also carry out my water test there and then, and on one occasion did tell me NOT to put any fish in there, so some LFS are not just out to sell you fish, this place does care where i go, i am practically living there, as i have been going or at least ringing up every day, they are nice people, not like another place i can mention, where the fish are nice, but the young people who work there, havnt got a clue, you mention fishes, and cycling etc..and they look at you like you have 2 heads Lmao...

You may be a good lfs employee but good lfs's are hard to come by in any country(i live in england too and i can't say i've come across one lfs i could call "good" yet) and different shops in chain store companys vary alot, its better to own your own test kits as its more practical and reliable :) .
