I have a 90g tank with two male platys and one female that is about to burst. I have plastic breeding trap and a net breeding trap. The last time I moved my pregnant platy to her own 10g tank and put her inside the plastic breeding trap she appeared to abort the babies. What is my best approach to maximize my surviving babies?

I have read allot and still am not sure the best approach.

I can move her to the 10g with mature media int he filter and put her in the breeding trap. Last time I did this I used 65% water from the tank she is in and 35% ro water; I was attempting to make the water a bit cleaner and one degree C lower to encourage her to give a healthy birth. This did not work... I have considered placing her in a large glass jar with some netting that would allow the babies to fit through but she could not...I would love more suggestions.

Thanks so much but hurry I think she will give birth with 24hrs....

I have a 10g ready to go and mature media to use if need be

Cheers

Plop in in the 10g without anything stoping here. If you have things in there for the fry to hide, she wont be able to eat them. Heck, i had 4 platy fry get passed my angel, parrotfish, mollies, platys, swordtail, guppies, danio's, and tetra's! There wasnt even that many hiding places!!!!!! With that big a tank you might want like, 40 female's, and 5 males! lol, with room to spare! Also, rule of thumb is 1 male to 2 females minnimum, as the males will fight, and stress the female out by chasing her always wanting to mate. Would love pic's!

I should also explain that I have 6 medium/small neon rainbows in the 90g and also there is 5 juveile Densions barbs in the tank that are aggressive eaters. So I feel no babies will survive in the 90g unprotected. I do like the idea of putting her in the 10g with many hiding spots. In the past I used hard plastic ziploc containers with small holes in them to allow the babies to hide in. I will do this again. I think the small plastic enclosure stressed the felmale last time and caused the abortion. Sound good?

Also my 90g is a moderately planted show tank with lots of co2 and lighting still the barbs are very crafty and can feed at all levels in the tank so I do feel the need to removed the pregnant platy. One male platy wont leave the poor female alone right now....

Thanks Kibensis12! You have helped me often in the past my old name "newfishaddict" somehow got deleted in the past few months...

hangon, am i getting this right........ you have a 90gallon tank with only 3 fish init?

if thats the case you shouldn't get any problems, the fry should pop out and get lost , being serious though, if you had some floating plants the fry would head for them when they pop out.

My experience is that platy's dont usually eat their fry, unlike say guppies. I dont know why by platies dont seem to be interested in their fry. Im not saying they wont, im saying if they are fed enough they shouldnt go for the fry.

Your welcome! You can always change your username to newfishaddict if you wnat( i think!). I was wandering where you were at, but i figuerd i would wait longer until i sent you as pm! There is still a good chance that some babies will make it, but putting the mom in the 10 almost insures high surviavl rate for mom and fry. Small enclosed spaces can eaisly kill a mom, espcially in birth. Plus, if she isnt comfortable, she will hold them in, until she cant any longer, leading to still born's and a dead mom. Got any pic's?

I can take pics this minute! Id love to show off my "Crincled Onion Plant" that is at least 9 feet if it stretched out! I working on a small brown algae issue but I know how to fix that. Ive got co2 flux too much and 11,000k bulbs! I have financial issues at the moment!

Ill take pics right now!

What do you mean "but i figured i would wait longer until i sent you as pm!" PM?

Cheers!

Do you remember me I had 5 denisons barbs and an angel in a 29g , the local store said no problem. They were wrong...

Here is a pic of the tank and the best close up I could get of the Pregant Female. This pic makes her look less pregnant then she is...

Thanks

Got one of her side? She looks pretty big, but maybe not big enough to be due today. But if not today, the move will be better this way, as then she can settle before she birth's.

Yes, Ill get another pic. From my limited experience she is for sure due within a week but perhaps not today. Ill get a better pic now. I agree that the move happening now could help her settle before the birth, sounds like a good thing...I can see l many dark "eyeballs" accumulating far back in her belly and also she as a small white protusion that looks like sign of a soon to come birth (from my LIMITED experience).
