Is that a black piranha? Doesnt look like a red belly. Looks very cool! :D

No he's not a "Red Belly" (Pygocentrus Nattereri) nor is he a "Black" (Serrasalmus Rhombeus)

He doesnt really have a common name, the closest would be Ruby Red Spilo. The correct sci name is Serrasalmus Sanchezi

This particular species has been known for quite some time, but has often been miss labeled. Only recently has the species really been identified correctly. Like many many other fish, there is tons of miss information about piranha.

If anyone is interested OPEFE is probably best, and most current information regarding all types of piranha.

Specifically...

Sanchezi

Black

Red Belly

There are many more species, he's got them all listed there, have a look!

Good lookin' P you have there! :D Do you only have the one?

Very cool! You must have done lots of research. How big do they get?

I used to have more, but tanks have been a changing lately. So yea, only the one, and generally this type of piranha should only be kept alone, altho some have kept them in groups with some success

Yea, most of it was after I had my fist Piranha. These guys will only grow about 6", it's one of the smaller species

My friend Michelle has 2 malnuished 'vegitarian' parhhanas.
I've seen them eat steak before! It was awesome!

thanks for all the replies!

This guy should be comfy in his 40 for quite some time, if not for his entire life. Most other types of piranha require a much larger tank.
