well for a start those fish are not suitable at all for a 40L tank - they require something much larger, probably 125L minimum.

What filter are you running on the tank?

How long has the tank been set up? You say 4 months you've had the fish, is that also the age of the tank?

What are the ammonia and nitrite readings from your tank water?

What are the ammonia and nitrite readings from your tank water? everything in normal ..

sorry, but will actual need the specific readings from your test kit.

I'm currently thinking there is an issue with your water quality that is the direct cause of your fishes ill health. We need to know the ammonia and nitrite readings first though.

the water which we get is purified and contains chlorine in it so i use anti chlorine other wise every thing is normal even ammonia and every thing is showing normal....

as stated above....you need to post the EXACT readings from your test kit.

does the anti chlorine do anything else? - mine removes : chlorine, chloramines and ammonia from tap water.

sir i guess my 1 fish is pregnant coz the other one is chasing her around the tank tabbing her at her belly with her head .... and that same fish seems weak ...

i just checked the ammonia and nitrite level ..... Ammonia ,the ph strip was showing lite green color .. which is marked as 7 on the box of measurement which is normal.. and nitrite , i used cooper sulphate (CuSO4)and boiled the water the results came that the water color changed to very lite blue so its is normal to .. .. and about the anti-chlorine it only removes chlorine from the water nothing else .. plz advise me what to do ?? or is it because one of my fish is pregnant ?? coz the other one is little active .

Unless I missed it, you still have not given an ammonia reading. If you are testing with strips and you keep getting 0 for ammonia, please have it rechecked with a liquid test kit. I have had the strips give false results before. In such a small tank, you could be having an ammonia spike. These fish are big ammonia producers.

Goldfish can't get pregnant; they're egglayers, and I doubt very much if they'd be wanting to spawn at this time of year (that's normally a springtime thing).

However, nearly all fish will pick on and harrass fish they know are sick; this can become a problem if the tank is too small and the weaker fish can't get away.

I'm not sure I understand your tests, but any reading that isn't zero, for either ammonia or nitrite, is a serious problem and you need to do as many water changes as is needed to bring them down to zero.

And, I don't want to sound harsh, but for the welfare of the fish, you must either give these fish a tank upgrade or look at re-homing them; a 40l tank just isn't large enough for goldies when you think how large they ought to grow;

yes that tank is way too small, goldfish produce double the amount of ammonia per inch of fish than tropicals, it sounds like one fish is bullying the other, how often do you clean the water how much do you change and how often, how did you cycle the tank and what filter do you have, how do you clean the filter, sorry to ask so many questions, but with out seeing the tank its hard to work out what the problem is, you say the test is normal, what in your mind is normal then, di

As everyone has said, the tank is on the small side for goldfish especially as they grow so big so fast.

However before you change tanks the question of water quality comes first. You really do need to get a good liquid test kit and prove that the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels are at 0, 0 and less than 80 respectively. API Master kit is the one most recommended on these forums.

Goldfish are one of the messiest fish around and need good filtration. I keep goldfish and had to put in a second filter to be sure I was cycling enough water in one of my tanks.

A 40L tank may look large for 2" goldfish but apart from producing large amounts of ammonia, the goldfish requires larger than normal amounts of oxygen. The surface of the water is where the oxygen transfer takes place, not much happens in a bubble stone. So the larger the surface area the greater the oxygen transfer.

The symptoms of your fish suggest ammonia poisoning so we really do need to see proper test results.

I found to keep on top of goldfish that you need twice weekly water changes and a filter rinse in tank water once every two weeks just to remove the huge amounts of sludge that builds up.

Hope that helps. Please keep us informed of your tank and fish condition.
