it's 37G tall tank
still in the cycling, should be able to put some fish into it in 3-4 days. it's my second tank and my first attempt at planting.

it's going to be a community tank.
so far, this is what i've been thinking:
4 danios
6 neons
6 harlequin rasboras
3 leopard cories
3 sterbai cories
1 red-tailed black shark
and maybe 3 dwarf gouramis

Nice tank! I love that big bit of driftwood/rock, which is it? Looks like a lovely natural set-up. :)

SPLiSH, it's a big piece of driftwood. i did that for a couple of reasons. first is that the water here is very basic so all the driftwood helps keep it moderate (still around 7.6) and second is that, you can't really see it in the picture but it creates a nice big cave that the cories and RTBS will like to hang out in.

as for the sand, that also serves a couple of purposes. not only did i put it in for the cories, it's also gravel from my old tank so i used it to seed the bacteria growth and speed up the cycle (which has worked well, the tank has almost fully cycled and it's only been set up for about a week). also, i think it just looks neat to have the different areas of gravel. the other thing you can't really tell from the picture is that it's a different sort of gravel on top of the big driftwood so it seems a bit more separated.

and for the neons, i wasn't planning on putting them in right away, they'll certainly be the last additions.

thanks for the good comments, guys!

What's the lighting on that deep tank? I see the Co2 unit and that's great. The plants will do so much better with CO2.

The tank looks great and it's very nice that you've put so much thought into the well-fare of your corys and bottom dwellers. I think they'll do very well in a tank with so many things for them to do.

I would increase the size of the danio school to 6, or perhaps rethink them all together. It's not like they wouldn't get along, they'd be fine, but I have always preferred seeing larger schools of less species. It looks really cool to have say 12 harlequins cruising the tank, rather than 6. The danios rapid action might also intimidate gouramis, who tend to move pretty slow, especially the dwarfs. In addition, the tannins released by the wood would really play up the color of harlequins.

It's going to be a lovely tank. Great job! :)

the lighting is a 20W "flora-glo" that supposedly has an ideal spectrum for live plants. i think that either that or the CO2 is doing wonders because even in a week, i've seen a lot of growth.

i'm only planning on doing 4 danios for the moment because i already have them in my other tank and i want to get them out of there but don't really want any more. i'm still sort of undecided on the gouramis. i just wanted a few more fish that were a bit bigger because i figured that i still have some space. i may well just make a the schools of neons and harlequins 8 instead.
i'm still very open to suggestions of interesting 3-4" fish that i can keep 2 or 3 of rather than getting the gouramis.

very nice set up

fish should be very happy in there obviously a lot of thought gone into it :shifty:

i am actually trying to get rid of the tannins. i have a feeling that it'll be like that for a while though because it is a very large piece of driftwood and i wasn't able to boil it or anything before i put it in. it'll probably always look a little yellow though because of the colour of the rocks as well.

thanks for the comments guys!

i've changed some things around already and am planning on adding a couple of bigger bushier plants in the next couple of days because it still looks a bit bare to me.

i've also added my first fish as my cycle has completed (11 days!). i've put in the danios from my other tank and some harlequin rasboras and the rtbs. they all seem happy and active. the rtbs has spent the majority of the time in the cave but he's coming out more and more and digging through the fine gravel i put in.
