My new tank water is very cloudy?

I think this is all wrong... :/

I have taken all the sponges out, and this is the order they were in....

2 blue (fine) sponges in bottom bit.

3 sponges in top bit, black to bottom, then green, then course blue.

Is this all wrong??

If it's a new tank set up that you've just done, there really isn't any need to be doing water changes already, unless the sand wasn't rinsed enough, which i am a little worried about. Although it was supposedly already clean, it's always best to clean it thoroughly just in case.

The best thing you can do is leave it alone, it's just settling down at the moment, keep the filter and heater and anything else going continuously. If you have all the required sponges etc from the previous owner and you've already set the tank up, i wouldn't start swapping them over now, or the problem will just get worse.

You should have 2 fine sponges and a gap in the bottom basket and 2 coarse sponges and a carbon and a fine white one in the top basket, or you can do away with one of the coarse ones and put one of the new nitrate sponges in instead.

keep adding live bacteria, don't worry about the plants, they're not a problem. Add a TINY pinch of food every 5 days or so, to help start the bacteria off.

A tank that size will need to be running for at least two weeks, ideally longer, don't rush to put any fish in, it's not worth it. When you do start adding them do so very gradually, just 3 or 4 at a time and leave a week in between. Don't feed them much either and only do it every other day, so you don't over load the tank.

Just be patient and see what happens, it should start to settle soon.

Sorry but I disagree. A tank that size will take at least a month to cycle. I have exactly the same tank.
The ammonia method is much better / accurate and faster than "adding food" method. Choose to do one or the other. Not both.

Do NOT add fish until the tank is fully cycled.

The sand almost certainly caused the cloudiness. This should reduce over the next few days. Different sources and types of sand react differently. Even "prewashed" sand needs washing.

The bottom basket, you say you need a gap? Where, between the 2 foams? Or gap at bottom, and 2 foams on top?? Or 2 foams on bottom, gap on top? :S

Almost right. 2 fine ones in the bottom. Then the 2 coarse ones and then the carbon - and then the white filter floss. It's fine to run the carbon until the tank is cycled, but they have a very limited lifespan and if you are going to have a planted tank, you should remove this once the tank is cycled.

Yes.

It's 2 fine and a gap in bottom basket, 2 coarse, 1 carbon and 1 white in the top, in that order, or there could be the green nitrate sponge instead of one of the coarse blue ones.

Good luck!

ps doesn't matter about the hose.

While the tank is cycling and going through the Nitrogen Cycle, no nitrate sponge should be added.

In general no nitrate sponge should even be used. Again it has a limited life span and it's a money making scheme for people who think it's a substitute for regular water changes.

And as your tap nitrate readings are zero, there really is no need for this sponge :)

Ok this is how i did it...lol

Gap, blue sponge fine, blue sponge fine in bottom basket
Black course, green course, blue course, in second basket...

I dont have any white ones yet, i ordered them on friday, so they should all be here today, should i put all NEW ones in, or use these that are already in it?? :S

So i need the black one to be at the top, under the white one? At the moment its at the bottom of the top basket.. :S

nope - starting from the bottom of the canister :

2 fine blue
2 coarse blue
1 black carbon
1 white filter floss (this is generally to filter out bigger particles such as leaves etc. so not vital at this point).

Use all new sponges and discard old ones. You never know what's lurking in them.

While the tank is cycling it's fine to have it in there. It helps to remove some of the cloudiness caused by the sand etc.
But as you want a planted tank, you really should remove it once cycled - and don't bother replacing it :)
Keep one handy though in case you need to medicate the tank - the carbon will then remove all traces of meds after treatment.

The green one is the Nitrate sponge. You shouldn't be using this in a tank that's cycling. And as your tapwater has zero nitrate, you probably won't ever need it anyway :) It has a very limited life span and really not worth it. Just do your water changes on a weekly basis once the tank is cycled.

This is what i have now.....after changing them round a bit lol

Bottom basket = Gap, 1 fine blue sponge, 1 fine blue sponge
Top Basket = Green Course sponge, Blue Course Sponge, Black sponge on top

I have yet to add any whites ones, but 1 goes on top right?

remove the green sponge while your tank is trying to cycle or you are just going to skew the cycle process and it's going to take longer.

So i should get rid of the green one, and add another blue course sponge? Is that what your saying??

My new sponges should arrive today, i will put all new ones in, should i change the water and start over again? As i have used the exsisting sponges already in there ???? :/
