Thanks :*

Don't know what the platty is sorry. Your going to get negative feed back on the gravel color , fake plants and the castles. But your the one who has to look at it everyday so if you like it don't worry about what others think.

What should the gravel color be? Whats wrong with fake plants? Whats wrong with castles? See Im new at this and would like to know what Im doing wrong ;) Thanks!

Does anyone know if I can use rocks & things from the outdoors? If so, how would I clean them? Thanks!

There is nothing wrong with what you're doing. It all depends upon your own taste. In general: most fish like 'hiding' places, be it behind or between plants or other ornaments.

I am using rocks in my tank, and I have cleaned them with water with a little bit of chloride in it. I then scrub them off throroughly, and rinse them 24 hours in clean water. After that I let them dry (preferably in the sun), and put them in the tank.

Wood should be boiled in water, and in general, if you are using wood, let it soak for a long time, as otherwise it will float in your tank!

Good luck!

I prefer natural looking tanks as well, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with fake plants and whimsical decor so long as you're providing your fish with some hiding spots. Nice looking fish, especially like the colors on that platy, no idea what the names for different color forms are though. :good:

Sigh of relief on the colors and all  My dream tank would have white sand and lots of crystals, rocks along with beautiful healthy plants. However I have a four year old girl, a two year old boy and a wee one...I try to make my tank pleasant to my kids taste- its all about the kids

Thanks for the replies and how to clean off the rocks and wood, I want to make little caves with outdoor rocks.

Is there any type of aeration on this tank? - just curious as I didn't see any little bubbles or anything...

I think the tank is nice looking - in time maybe some more plants?

the thing I've noticed over time with the fake plants is that the plastic - y collect algae and the silk ones either start fraying(spelling ?) at the ends of them. Then again, maybe it's the water in my tank. But there's such a huge assortment of plants to choose from that options are endless. I still have fake plants in my tanks(for now) and the fish don't seem to mind much.

Fun idea on having the kids involved with the tank :D

personnaly, i quite like the tank. dont know why but i feel the gravel does go well with the background :good:
but on the other hand its not my type of tank. i do prefer the "natural" look. and its not meant to look like a jungle really, it more of a sunken forest or whatever the amazon is. stuff like that. bog wood, sand, rocks.
after a while, you'll see more and more tanks like this and chances are you'll buy a rock, maybe another, maybe a bit of wood and then suddenly say "hey, why dont i try real plants?" and it'll just build and build.
thats what i did anyway :shifty:

Awwww thanks everyone, though I have a feeling most compliments were out of pitty  ...yeah Im definitely still working on it with little money for resources etc. My son wanted to put spongebob in there, my daughter wanted my little ponies lol..uh I wont go that far

So yeah eventually more plants & hidding places...and when my 3 month old turns 1 yrs old I might begin testing out real plants.

Question? I dont have any bubbles or aeration like someone mentioned above...hmm Ive asked others who said it wasnt necessary, but read the water could become stagnant without it...so what is true? Thanks!!!!!

again i dont know what the platy real name is but to be honest its justa normal platy
the tank only looks great till u think it looks great

That was me. From all that I've read, it's not necessary to have aeration (air stone, bubble wand, etc) as long as the top surface of the water is being agitated(from the pictures, it looks like you have a h.o.t. filter. I've read quite a few articles on having aeration on the tank(especially if you don't have live plants). One thing that I read multiple times is that there was a certain type of beneficial bacteria in the water that responds to converting waste better if you had some type of air stone in the tank... but then, you can't go by EVERYthing you read on the net.

as far as making the water stagnant, I don't think so. Regular water changes and and some sort of surface agitation would be good enough. Extra is always is better, though.
