Hi guys i'm sorry I am very forgetful and forgot what it was called, plus I am quite rubbish at identifying things like this. I went to my local dobbies which have stunning fish as one of my walls on my tank gets a little bit of algae and I thought an algae eater would be nice. So I got this little guy. The pics are a bit rubbish since he is very shy.

Can someone tell me what he is please? He is very small not even an inch long. Dark brown with spots all over his body and stripes on his tail. On the receipt it says ancistrus which I believe is the generic word? I am sure she called it something beginning with an S.
The guppies are very curious they hover around him but as soon as he moves they dart away.
Is he a plec at all? Thanks

Bristlenose imo :good:
Thanks for your reply. I am upgrading to a 60 litre when it arrives around the 6th of january. Will he just stay this size? He is very cute  I hope he doesn't grow huge.
The ones in the other tank I couldn't have (or want) as they were far too big but they didn't have bristles on their noses so they must have been different.

Yep looks like a bristlenose - but 60 liters is not really big enough for them :/ you would have been better off with horned nerite snails, algae eating shrimp, ottos or pitbull plecs.

Wills

Females don't get bristles on their noses. They get small 'whiskers', but nothing like a male. And yes, 60 litres is too small for one. They can reach 6" easily.

Oh no, what shall I do? She sold me it for my 40 litre I have just now. They had panda corys they were very small, but she said they wouldn't be suitable. She then showed me these ones and the only reason I took him was because he was so small and that on their card it says max length 2 inches.
I appreciate your help guys.

Was it a P@H? If so then they usually carry Pitbull Plecs which do stay around the size you mention. Usually 2 for £7 iirc. BN's are very chunky fish and can be quite balshy.

No it was at dobbies garden world who have some very beautiful fish and usually well informed staff. They have such a huge variety but those ones you mention weren't there-then again I wasn't looking for them. They had albinos and glass catfish which looked very unusual, lovely panda corys, peppered corys and bronze corys. They had some plecs which were huge in the tank under the one I was looking at but I didn't get their name, because they were too big.
Is the one I have a baby? I haven't seen him for a while now but then again I do have plants everywhere so maybe he is hiding.

I wouldn't say it will reach 6 inches easily, will take a fair amount of time to reach that size if it does.

What dimensions are this tank?

ID given already is correct btw.

The tank I have at the moment:
Width - 36cm
Length - 35cm
Height - 44cm

The tank I bought on amazon last night:
Width - 40cm
Length - 50cm
Height - 45cm

Thanks :)

That is almost big enough, just, in my opinion.

Time is on your side and a Bn will be a lot easier to move on that a common should you wish to do so in the future.

Oh I wouldn't want to give him up he's so cute and whizzes around the tank. It's not even anything I go for but this one wall in my tank keeps getting algae and I brush it down but by doing that I disturb the plants. I am now fascinated and have been googling it since I came back.
I can't be selfish obviously if he does grow to astronomical proportions I will have no choice :(
I have never had a massive fish before it's quite daunting! My angel fish were only the small variety about 5 years ago when I kept them! 3 inches max!
I am hoping my new tank comes by next week-but probably not due to these holidays  lol
Thanks for the help.

In the general scheme of things this is not a massive fish, certainly won't reach 'astronomical proportions'

Perfect starter pleco in my eyes, it's a slippery slope from here though, I must warn you....

Haha I have caught the bug so badly. I only had this tank up about 2 months? and now I have already bought a bigger one due to the vast knowledge on this site.
I started with one plant, a pair of platy and no heater as I wanted an easy, coldwater setup. Same mistake as a lot of newbies-I knew nothing about cycling, water changes or ammonia levels. The angel fish I had years ago were in the flat when I moved in. I joined this site and look at me now-I have a forest in there, have test kits coming out my ears, added an interpet heater, the platy were taken by my friend in his fancy big tank and he gave me 3 female guppies. I then got 3 male guppies and now the tank looks awesome and added this little plec and I love it :D
Unless you mean something else and that they are very hard to look after

Some are more difficult then others, the one you have is easy.

Feed it wafers and also fresh vegetables, Courgette (Zuchini if you are a septic) is a big hit usually
