Hello to you all.

I am having 3 Pitbull Plecs (LDA25) delivered over later. The chap is gonna bring about 6 for me to choose from. I am hoping to get 2 females and 1 Male, so that eventually I can watch them at work, so to speak.

Can anyone tell me a good or easy or even basic way of sexing them. I think they'll be juvys so I am just gonna take a rough guess, probs eenie minie mo. lol

He says some have full bellies to wider heads, and others are more slender but straight. (Don't think I'm explaining myself very well here)

Any advice welcome. he's coming in 4 or so hours so help would be needed urgently.

Got them now and I think (cant be sure) I've ended up with 2 males and 1 female (when I was selecting them it looked the other way round but they are damned hard to sex

Hopeful Andy

Can noone help me. He'll be here in an hour or so. I'm begging for your advice. I'm on my knees and absolutely begging. lol

Males have longer pelvic fins, the tip of which extends beyond the origin of the anal fin, the urogenital papilla is positioned just after the anal opening in males. In females the tip of the pelvic fin does not reach the anal fin origin and the urogenital duct opens to the inner cloacal cavity.

No point getting stroppy about no reply - it might have been worth researching it before telling the fella to come over with them ;) Or posting on a plec board like Planet Catfish or Plecofanatics, where you're more likely to get a quicker reply!

Sorry Lisa I wasn't getting stroppy, I was just hoping for some extra knowledge or insiders tips other than the planet catfish pointers.

I did research them previously thats why in the last 2-3 months I decided to get pitbulls.

My apologies.

Anyway on another note. They are in a bowl floating in the tank acclimatising and I will post some pics probably tomorrow to make up for sounding stroppy.

Thanks people.

I'm so happy they are soooo cute.

they are quite hard to sex... I dont know what our 4 are... other than the fact the 5th is actually a dwarf gold spot in the end :)

OK so I got my 3 wee pitbulls on Sunday. Marcus from Pleco Aquatics dropped round because he's quite local to me and gave me a choice of 7 that he had in the box.

After trying to see if I could sex them (God thay are hard to sex) I picked my 3 and we set them in a bowl in their own water floating in the top of my tank, following the usual tip some water in tip some water out for the nect 35 minutes, until I was happy that they were acclimatised, and then set them free making sure I let in as little of the 'their' water as possible, just in case.

I look at them now and sometimes I think I've got 2 male and 1 female, then next time I think they're all male, then next time 2 female 1 male. etc. we'll just have to wait and see if anything happens.

The delightful thing I have found is that unlike the usual nature of plecs to hide a lot. They prefer just to laze right in the front centre of the tank on the sand (still feeding on the glass at night) therefore i can almost always see them.

I thought you guys might like a peek (taken on day 3)

Forgive the quality but I have an old cheapo 2mp camera and it makes everything look dark and doesn't like the macro mode any closer than a foot, so to get close enough to get good pics is impossible.

They are the cutest things don't ya think?

£30 for the three including hand delivery. can't be bad. Gold Star for Marcus :good: :hooray:  :thanks:

that's a tad expensive. $6 USD a pop. that comes to $18 here. that's almost half the # of pounds in USD.

you payed like, 4x the norm then?

That seems to be the usual price in UK, when I have managed to spot them on UK websites.

U have got the exchange rate wrong £10 = $18.50 each £55.50 total.

They are wild caught, and I don't think thats too much to pay. I'll have a look at some other UK prices.

Plecs do seem to be a lot cheaper in the US, I guess due to the proximity of the US to Brazil & Columbia.

I gave Inane Cathode a url for a US mail order plec site, and although they haven't got any pitbulls they seem a lot cheaper when you convert the dollar to pounds!! Maybe the current currency exchange rate, and as the dollar gets weaker it makes UK prices look v expensive.

For example on this website Zebra Plecs are $150 which is about £80 and that is dirt cheap for a plec, over here we'd be talking £120 minimum for a 3/4 inch specimin.

The Zebras on here are $150each 3/4 to 1 inch. todays exchange rate is £1 = $1.9663 which makes £76.29 (nearly half the UK price)

you cant compare US UK prices... you cant really even compare UK prices as it all depends on the price the importer paid and the number of losses they had etc.

£10 each delivered isnt bad.
While ours cost us less, I bought them as the shop recieved them in, freshly imported with no guarentee - we bought 8 and lost 2 - left us with 6 at a higher average price.

I left the glass for 2 weeks inbetween rehoming the commons rehomed and getting the pitbulls, so that they would have a nice bit of algae there to eat.

After 1 week I've just got the magnet cleaner out for the first time in eons (The commons used to keep it clean)

These pitbulls are virtually (they are sometimes on it) ignoring the glass and indeed algae, and are in fact non stop wood eaters lol.

Not complaining cos theyre cute and cool characters, plus theres plenty of wood in there for em.

I wish they'd save me having to work though. lol

They will probably like a bit of cockle or mussel if they are not massive herbivores

They don't touch the frozen bloodworm I put in twice a week, and they are supposed to be similar to Ottos in that they are scavengers for Algae.

They are going to the glass more often each day, but in the main they are eating bogwood or sifting the sand like corys. lol. Oh well out with the magnet
