OK,

So, on a trip to look at Hamsters with Mrs Steve, we went to Pets@Home, where I never normally buy fish from.

Anyway, I had a look in the tank and saw something brilliant.

It was a group of shrimps, some up to 5 inches long, that were as fat and long as your little finger. They also had blue lobsters as well.

I got two lobsters and 5 of these shrimp, but I can find zero information on them, and I've looked everywhere.

They were labelled as "regal shrimp", look very like amano shrimp, but 4 times the size, are scavangers rather than fan feeders and also a couple of them have their two front legs as claws, but hugely delicate ones.

The way they look, they almost look like a marine shrimp. The closest I have seen is a cleaner shrimp in size and shape, but these are clear rather than red and white, and seem very happy in fresh water. One is already carrying the beginning of an egg ball, so it doesn't make me thing they are brakish or marine that are stuck in fresh water.

I'll post some pictures as soon as I find the cable to link my camera to the PC. They dwarf my adult cory's so the pictures look pretty good as they have both shrimps and corys in the same picture.

The reason I post this is that I can't find any info on these guys at all. P@H had nothing, and I've not come across anything anywhere else. The fact that one of them is carrying the makings of an egg ball seems a good sign, and they are eating well and trundle around the tank, so I don't think they'll be a problem, but I would like to do some reading about them.

Thanks

Steve

They sound really cool :D I wish my pets@home had stuff like that, maybe they do... you live in the uk? If so where? It may be worth me taking a trip to one of the pets at home around me.... :)

please be aware that any shrimp with pincers is a danger to your fish and generally unsuited to a community tank. many of the blue lobsters (~99% of those sold in the UK) also grow to a foot in length and are ferocious predators.

Freshwater prawns, maybe?

Which P@H was it? some have long armed shrimp in (macrobrachium spp.) some have cherry shrimps in and also there are several that have cameroon armoured shrimp and rock/wood/bamboo in?

Blue lobsters are predatory critters (fish tend to not last long with them), while as this page has quite a few long arm shrimp which look similar to amano shrimp which may be of much help in helping you ID your new shrimp;

Also check out the florida ghost shrimp on this page;

Oh dear, those are freshwater prawn. They get a big as lobsters and are insanely aggressive in general, they have been known to kill and eat fish twice their size. Not something you want to keep with cories at all! I had one for a little while, they are really cool critters. He was in with some pretty large, aggressive, and hardy fish... one of which decided to kill and eat him. :| I suspect the yo-yo loach and bichir had a prawn feast.
