Hi all, just a quick question, i have this in my front room............................

I added some guppy's on Saturday ( don't ask what type because i haven't a clue, they are quite bluey black with an iridescent bluey green on the flanks of the body and tail) I came to check them this morning and two had leaped out to their deaths :/ , im gutted, ive still got 4 in there, 2 really small and 2 adult.
Should i remove the guppy's? Are they normally jumping fish or is this just a one off??

Cheers.
Graeme.

well some fish do jump but i never new of guppies doing it...

hmm ive known other fish to be jumpers but not guppies. maybe a betta would work better in there...

well, mine had jumped before, and its due to stress and bad water condition.I would advise you to check your water and to put a lid on your tank.

Bettas are quite the jumpers too, and they'd definitely need a lid.

Guppies can jump for a few reasons. How big is the tank? What are the water stats at? Do they have any real place to hide? And what ratio of females to males do you have?

You could consider adding a clear glass lid, that's what I have on most of my planted tanks. You hardly even notice it. :)

The picture you can see is for dispalay perposes, for when i want to show it off, when im not displaying it its about 1cm lower and there is a hang on the back filter made by AquaVital.
I do a water change evrey 3-4 days, and the there is only 4 females in the cube two of which are tiny.
The two that jumpped out did so in the first night, and im ptting it down to them setteling in.

Sorry for the poor spelling.
Graeme.

its really hard to tell how big your tank is
they may have jumped if they were being chased and the tank was too small and they had nowhere to hide

Lower the tanks water level, leave a good 4-5" at least.. this will reduce the change of jumping.

My guppys always jump,i dont believe its due to stress or water conditions its just something fish do.I have a Species Encyclopedia and it says guppys will jump if a lid is not fitted. My Danios also do it and i suppose a lot more fish do.I know you may think a lid will spoil your tank so why not just get a plastic cover glass and it will prevent your fish from drafts :good:
