Fish Fanatic
Hi,
I am Clare and i have spotted this topic. I was advised they would grow to around 3 ft but apparently that`s not the case. Ours have more than doubled in size in 3 months. They are gentle giants and eat really well, feeding on mussel, prawn and cockle mainly so hopefully yours will soon fatten up as he looks worryingly thin.
We were planning on a tank 12ft x 5ft x 4ft at least for 2 of these, a red tail, 2 pseudodoras niger and 2 granulosis but it looks like we need bigger. As we are growing them on this won`t be a problem. We already have the fish room built but not fitted out ( we are not getting it ready quite yet),. A tank 8 x 3 x 2 is the next stage for them growing on. Then as they get bigger and we get more of an idea of their size we can design the tank appropriatly.
We would never stunt their growth by not providing a tank big enough, they are fine in this tank but will be even better when we upgrade. All our fish have plenty of room to move, the only ones at the moment which are in a tank which we feel is too small are the mbu and perruno but they are to be upgraded at the same time. They have grown tremendously, even though we bought them as fully grown.
There is always a discrepancy on what is the maximum size of a fish, sites like fishbase often give a size which can be achieved in natural habitats, and even then is usually the biggest ever recorded. However, when you speak to people who specialise in catfish it is always worth asking them how big in they have seen them in aquariums.
We know someone who saw a giraffe cat well over 3ft, and we always base growth on the bigger estimates.
