Hi all, i just wanted to introduce you all to Fyn, my new Betta.

I had no choice but to bring this lil fella home, after i went to the lfs in hunt of a double tail.

I got to the shop, and had a good look around, and found that all of their bettas had nipped fins, and even had a male in with a tank load of females!!! Which on the sign above the tank, had

"Female siamese Fighter,
a community fish who has splendid colours, often comes in red, purple, and blue.
keep 3 females to 1 male "

I was totally shocked, so much so i had a debate about it with the shop assistant.

Then, im walking around the ship, and noticed some Harlequins, (ive only got 1 left, so was looking to see if i could be tempted to get 5 more to make a schal of them) and who do i see desperately trying to fend them off of him ? a cute, bright red betta, who has had all of his fins nipped off, all the way back to his body! so badly that he didnt even look like a female betta! let alone a male!

His fins were all chewed off, and the only fins he had were his side fins, whihc were frantically flapping up and down, trying to keep him out of the harlequins way. :(

i had to wait for the assistant to finish serving someone else, but when i did get to talk to him, i told him how furious i really was that some one could let a bettas fins get in this state!

I oftered the shop the choice of me taking him home (at a discounted price) and taking care of him propperly, or them moving him to another tank, where he could be on his own, with medicine to help prevent him getting a bacteria problem on his chewed off fins.

the shop assistant would have it that the shop was being cruel to put him in with harlequins, especially wen he was already poorly, so i asked for the manager, who had exactly the same opinion, and sed that the fish would be fine without medicine, and would be safe with other nippy fish.

i eventually managed to get him to agree to discount him, and let me take him home to recover, and be looked aftrer the way he should have been in the first place.

He is now in a 2 gallon tank, with a plant he can lay in when hes worn out, which is close enough 2 the water surface for him to reach up for air, without panicing, he has 2 ornaments to hide in when he wants to hide away from the light, or people looking at him, and propper betta pellits, flake food, and more importantly, melafix!

i hope to upload a pic of him later today, although he still has no fins.

thanks for taking the time and effort to read his story. Fingers crossed he makes a full recovery, and ends up being a charming lil fish again.

thats great caroline, wen i got my new betta he wasn't quite as bad off as urs sounds  make sure u get something in there for fin rot and he should grow all his finage back

Way to go Caroline on rescuing your new boy. I sure hope he makes it okay. I can't believe the ignorance and callousness of those lfs personnel. :grr: Disgusting! You had alot of outrage on your side I bet to fuel you standing up to them like that...awesome! I still am furious at them for being so cruel to that fish. You allowed that they might just be ignorant but no, they choose to be willfully arrogant and apathetic as well. OOOOOH. So glad you laid it on the line for them. Do keep us posted on your new little sweetie. I'm SO GLAD you saved him. No matter what happens to him, now he knows somebody cares and he's getting the respect he deserves! :)

Thanx snowyz mom, it was horrible to see him in there, nofins, and having harlequins nipping at his lil stumps.

Hes recovering well, hes started growing new fins, which are clear at the moment, but im sure with time and meds they will get back to normal, and go red again.

Although the lfs were so nasty, the "boy" who i was orginally telling off, seemed very interested in finding out how he was wen i went there 2 show my mum the state of the other bettas they had there.

He spotted me as soon as i walked into the store, and came and asked how he was doing, which shocked me, as i duno if he was genuinely concerned, or witing 2 say, i knew he wud die. -_-

My mum was abit upset abt the state of the other male bettas they had there, but was over the moon to finally see what a double tail looked like in real life (shes not pc literate, and thinks things look different on a monitor)

The store had already sold the male that they had in with their females, unless he passed on, but he seemed like he was put in there so he wud flare more, meaning he wud get snapped up by sum betta addict like me!

I will have to take sum pix of him, to show u all how well his fins are comming along.

Hes being treated like royality at the moment, i check on him every 10 minutes if im at home, and if im out i ring up n get sum1 else to  im corrently feeding him sum growth food, that i usually feed my guppy and molly fry, to help promote his growth. I did try him on betta bites, bio gold, but hes not interested in them, he likes the flakes. so he gets given a pinch of growth flake food at 1 feed, then normal flakes on the next feed, and then back to the growth flake food n then the normal flakes etc. cus im feeding him every 4 hours now, to try and keep him healthy, cus i was worried he wasnt eating enough, cus of the current the filter makes, the food was being blown away frm him, n he cudnt catch up with it in time b4 the filter ate it.

Im keen to find out wen his fins have grown back, wot sort of tail he will have, as no1 at the shop knew, and cus his fins are gone, its hard to say.

but i will keep u all posted !!! :D

Update!!!

Fin has now been having growth food abt 6 times a day, having melafix, and having a treat of blood worms twice a week, and hes growing !

Hes now got a tail thats abt 3mm long, and his dorsal fins are abt 3mm long, n the top fins are abt 3mm aswell, so im obviously doing something rite!
