Hi all, i just wanted to introduce you all to Fyn, my new Betta.
I had no choice but to bring this lil fella home, after i went to the lfs in hunt of a double tail.
I got to the shop, and had a good look around, and found that all of their bettas had nipped fins, and even had a male in with a tank load of females!!! Which on the sign above the tank, had
"Female siamese Fighter,
a community fish who has splendid colours, often comes in red, purple, and blue.
keep 3 females to 1 male "
I was totally shocked, so much so i had a debate about it with the shop assistant.
Then, im walking around the ship, and noticed some Harlequins, (ive only got 1 left, so was looking to see if i could be tempted to get 5 more to make a schal of them) and who do i see desperately trying to fend them off of him ? a cute, bright red betta, who has had all of his fins nipped off, all the way back to his body! so badly that he didnt even look like a female betta! let alone a male!
His fins were all chewed off, and the only fins he had were his side fins, whihc were frantically flapping up and down, trying to keep him out of the harlequins way.
i had to wait for the assistant to finish serving someone else, but when i did get to talk to him, i told him how furious i really was that some one could let a bettas fins get in this state!
I oftered the shop the choice of me taking him home (at a discounted price) and taking care of him propperly, or them moving him to another tank, where he could be on his own, with medicine to help prevent him getting a bacteria problem on his chewed off fins.
the shop assistant would have it that the shop was being cruel to put him in with harlequins, especially wen he was already poorly, so i asked for the manager, who had exactly the same opinion, and sed that the fish would be fine without medicine, and would be safe with other nippy fish.
i eventually managed to get him to agree to discount him, and let me take him home to recover, and be looked aftrer the way he should have been in the first place.
He is now in a 2 gallon tank, with a plant he can lay in when hes worn out, which is close enough 2 the water surface for him to reach up for air, without panicing, he has 2 ornaments to hide in when he wants to hide away from the light, or people looking at him, and propper betta pellits, flake food, and more importantly, melafix!
i hope to upload a pic of him later today, although he still has no fins.
thanks for taking the time and effort to read his story. Fingers crossed he makes a full recovery, and ends up being a charming lil fish again.
