Yeah, Male rainbows can loose their colour eventually if there's no females to display to.

Could that be the reason why my red rainbow alternates between a bright red and a dull bronze colour?

That's just his mood. They don't actually lose their color, they simply don't display their full coloration. They have control of their coloration and it can change at a whim. It's part of enjoying rainbows seeing them change color before your eyes.

It's just that only the Red Rainbow seems to do this in my aquarium. I must admit I find it fascinating.
