My New 65 Gallon! And Stock List

Ok, So phase II is complete! Silk plants and cichlid stones! I know it is not as exciting as a planted tank, but I am happy with it, what do you think. I may rearrange the stones on the left side.

Ft. Hood till Nov. Then I have to abandon my Cowboys to Falcon land "Georgia" :-( I'll probably be stoned "shot" when I go everywhere in my cowboys jerseys :)

Yeah I'm a Texans guy myself. Unfortunately Cowboys fans can support the Texans when in the playoffs, but Texans fans are labeled as Blasphemers if they support the Cowboys Lol. It's a shame.

So are you able to support an Aquarium being stationed there?

Lol We like the Texans too! I grew up a Cowboys fan, but I have been keeping a close eye on the Texans for about 4 years now. It's not like we are Giants fans who like the Jets! THATS blasphemous. lol My hubby is cracking up that I'm talking football :p

I don't know if there is an aquarium very close. Maybe in Austin. Would have to check it out.

Anyway post pics when you get stocked! They are gonna love that big tank :)

Update! Cold Cathode kit is on the way to install DIY moon lighting! Dwarf Rainbows soon to come!

Ok, so I have my first inhabitants. I introduced a school of 15 redeye Tetras into the tank on Saturday. They seem at home by today and seem to have fun zipping back and forth across the front glass. Schools of fish are so cool. :good:. I am the worst when it comes to having a definitive plan. I always change my mind. So It will be a few weeks before I add any more tank inhabitants. What I have not changed my mind on is a pair of Rams and a pair of Apistogrammas. I like the Boesemanis too, but there is a guy in town who has posted young Angelfish in need of re homing. It looks like his fish Bred! I was wondering If anyone had opinions on Angels vs. Boesemanis. And how Either will fair with the rams, apistos, and redeyes. My tank is 2 feet tall. Thanks

I would get boesemanis if I had the money for them. But they usually go from $11-$20 each around here, and they need to be kep in a group of 6, more to get their more extravagant colors. They're pretty active and due to the big group of red eyes and such, I think a group of 6 is the last thing you could fit in regards to middle-top dwelling fish.

Honestly, after seeing the dwarf rainbows at my LFS, I was jealous that they weren't compatible with my tanks (due to either big fish or too much fish already). a good group of them would be much nicer imo.

Did your tank really cycle? Seems like that went by really quickly

In regards to angels, you could probably also fit a single or pair with the red eyes and the boesemanis/dwarf rainbows. But a group of 6 would not be advisable unless you knock out the rainbows completely and just have them with the school of red eyes. Some angelfish can be very aggressive, so keep that in mind. Usually angels get along fine with dwarf cichlids, but it really depends on the angels temperament.

Other fish that could work in place of the angels (and are usually less aggressive) are festivums or pearl gouramis.

on a side note, your tank is gorgeous in comparison to how plastic/silk tanks usually look.

Thanks for the input. I like the way the dwarf rainbows looked in the store and I went back and watched them for about 3 days in a row. I just really enjoyed the schooling action of the Tetras. It was more uniform and calming. The Dwarfs just wouldn't settle down enough for me to enjoy them. Cool looking but hyper active. May have been different in a larger tank like mine at home. I have no regrets though. The redeyes have a nice shimmer as they move across the tank, and that Red eye is just cool. Plus they are cheap! :good:
As far as cycling, I have had alot of filter media from my other tank in there since day one and I have been watching the parameters pretty closely. I may have jumped the gun slightly, but I couldn't stand to keep telling my 3 yr old that we couldnt get fish yet.(I'm a pushover) I will continue to watch the parameters closely and stay on top of it. I'm still torn between a pair of Angels and about 6 Boesemani's The Angels are beautiful, but so are the rainbows. Only thing about the boesemani's I see at the LFS is that they are almost always dark and look sickly. Even at the more reputable lfs's around here. I think it may be they are just not happy. It's kind of a turn off  If I saw some at the LFS that looked like the ones I have seen pictures of on websites like this one. I would snatch them up. I probably sound snooty with that last statement.

BTW Thank you very much for the compliment. I worked hard to achieve the most realistic look I could. The plants sway really naturally in the flow as well. My wife was very happy with the way it turned out. I think she secretly thought it would look tacky. lol

So, I took the Red Eyed Tetras back to the store! I came home last week and My wife and son said HAPPY BIRTHDAY! as my little boy pointed over to the Big Tank. I looked over and my heart sunk... at first  . They had gone to the LFS that I frequent, picked out some really nice turquoise rainbowfish, I had been eyeing, brought them home and plopped them in the tank. She did all of the research and talked to the store owner for a while. She properly acclimated them and shut the lights off after putting them in the tank. I was very proud to hear that she cared enough to be that thoughtful and do it the right way. However, I think she learned the hard way why some fish keepers are so crazy about planning, stocking, and quarantine. After a few days, those #19### Tetras nipped at the rainbows constantly over stressing them. It was crazy, a couple of red eyes would seperate the rainbow school, get their attention then another few would sneak attack from behind. One of the tetras even took a chunk out of one of the rainbows. After seeing this, I immediately removed the Tetras and took them back. I am in love with the rainbows and my son was so proud of the Gifts they got "Daddy", I couldn't stand to watch them picked apart. Right when I got home I treated with Melafix and shut the lights off. Over the next 2 days, I lost the Female rainbow that had been attacked and my only Male had contracted ICH. So, I am currently treating for ICH and Fungus. The ICH has disappeared, but the treatment continues for a while. Everyone seems alot better. The Male is showing off for the three females and all 4 have developed brilliant color. I was not angry that the Tetras were acting naturally as I understand they can be nippy, but I had a school of 15, they are supposed to be peaceful, and I did all of the research before deciding on them with rainbows in the plan. They were down right Aggressive. I have never seen Tetras act that way. Not even my Phantoms or Bloodfins. I will never buy Red Eyes again. Im glad the store owner gave me credit for them.
