My Marine Tank

For those of you who dont go into the marine section, i thought i would share with you my marine tank that has been setup for 2 weeks and is cycling with live rock and sand.

Looking good so far!! I'm currently at the same stage, looking forward to putting some cleaner shrimp and crabs/snails in!

Mine is smaller though!

Impressive! Quick question about the sump though. When one of my mates dad was keeping discus he was using a sump and and one very impressive 70L 3 stage 'filter' tank full of various substrates to keep the water quality perfect for his fish. Now I'm guessing this what the smaller tank with the substrate in your sump is for. Would it be possible to use that set up for a freshwater tank so that it could be overstocked (not by much) and keep the water quality pristine??

Yes sumps can easily be used for FW and yes they alow you to over stock a 10g tank with a 100g sump counts as 110g of water .

Nice marine tank, few pointers though.

1) More LR is needed in future.

2) Point the power heads directly at the LR from both directions, a strong current running through it is essential for filtration.

Well it's not exactly 110G... it would be cruel to keep an Oscar in that 10G even though the filtration can technically handle it... though I understand what your saying.

I would agree with the LR and powerhead pointers... the LR is your filter... not just something to put coral on or for your fish hide between. High flow from your powerheads/return pump from sump should be atleast 20X tank volume if you plan on keeping any corals. Some need even more flow. To achieve this flow you can use maxi's with the mod set to increase the flow quite a bit, or buy some more expensive powerheads from Tunze or Seio that will give you much more flowrate. It would be advisable to prob go with the seios or tunze powerheads (which it look like you have atleast one) as they will be more durable and last longer as they were designed to push high flow rates (unlike a maxi-with a mod attached). Obv, if you have been posting in the salty section, you've heard all this before, but just saying my 2 cents.

Thanks for comments guys, i know i need alot more LR, just cant add it all at once because its expensive stuff. So far i have about 20kg and i need a further 30kg. I 2 powerfull powerhead at the front on either side point directly into the LR and the other 3 just keep a good circulation. I might biy another one of the powerfull ones though.
The plans are to have a reef with corals. The fish will be :
-shoal of 5 yellow tangs
-2 commen clowns
-shoal of green chromis
-six line wrasse
-some sort of fairy wrasse
-spotted mandarin...eventually
-some sort of blenny or goby
-and maybe a pair of banggi cardinals.
-shrimp, snails and hermits.

of course the stock list will probably change somewhere along the way but you get the basic idea of i nice colourfull reef.

I am not near the level of some of the marine yogi's that are on TFF but I thought I remember hearing that keeping multiple tangs is a bad idea if space is limited. Maybe 1 tang to 60 to 70G of water.... I don't know, maybe I am mistaken. I know they aren't as fierce as angels when it comes to territory, but i believe the risk is still there. Im sure people like ski, stealhlr, and all the others would know, but maybe they have already signed off on it being ok...

I don't know about that... it's usually about 75g per yellow... There will be territorial issues.

Yellow tangs are highly agressive to their own species, maximum in that tank should be 2, 1 preferbly... Are you thinking of a reef?? or just FWLRO?
