I'd never heard of birds doing that before! what's that about? is there some natural behaviour that she's trying to satisfy or is it just that your house isn't warm enough?

It's a natural behavior birds do to gather nesting material. Norma Jeane shreds a sheet of paper into strips with her beak and tucks them under her wings. It's so much fun to watch her do that!
